I hate stories in my games. In fact, I hate characters as well. What really burns my *** are stories that drag on for days through twists and inventions of the narrator. If a story can't be pitched in an intro video - I do mean video, not a Darkest Dungeon/Witcher 3 slide show - then it is going to be ****. No story will ever match the Illiad or Mann's biography of Wallenstein. There's no worldbuilding on par with The Ancient City. No story can carry bad combat or enhance good gameplay. I declare war on all stories.

Were you triggered by Disco Elysium or something?

I'm not against stories, but I sure have played many games in which I dreaded advancing the plot because it would mean wading through another ocean of needless dialogue.

I hate lore-heavy games more than I hate narratives. Death to wikipedia NPCs. Characters should act naturally at all times. Lore bits should be an optional secret to discover for those interested, not something to force upon all players.

They should insert minigames into books so that you have to periodically stop reading and play the little game before you can start reading again.

NPCs should stop talking to the player character, if we ask them about lore, unless that npc is a "loregiver" like a wiseman, glownigger, sailor, church lady, etc. I like the idea of certain npcs being wikis you get a search field to ask anything you want, even just recognizing keywords. What I dislike is how certain devs have made a rule where npcs can't be wrong or lie.

I don't hate stories in games I hate when video games stop being video games so that the the hack writer can live out his fantasy of directing a movie by forcing me to watch a cutscene/hold W to slowly walk forward while the melodrama he wrote plays out.
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

All that matters is having good characters. The story is secondary. Well, it shouldn't, but I've long since accepted that no video game writer is ever going to say something new about the human condition and touch our souls. Shakespearian they're not. So at least let's hope for cute grills with affable personalities and good bros accompanying your journey.

Eww. Digging up her grave must have been quite a chore. Not sure what's left there after 20+ years, anyway, but it was probably pretty unpleasant...

Individual characters & storylines are what people care about when they say 'story'.
Witcher 3 has one of the worst stories but it gets praise anyways for having some good characters and individual questlines.
Thank you for your attention to this matter!

No story can carry bad combat
The most popular SRPGs are almost entirely popular due to their narratives and characters and not the actual strategic quality. Nobody suffers through Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, or Fire Emblem 4 because the gameplay is fun.

So what's a "good" story?
Bioshock?

Video games have the advantage of being the best medium for atmospheric storytelling but very few games get this right. Now it’s actually mainly just used to demoralize young men by filling all games full of inversions. Masculine girlboss women, gay and weak men, misunderstood demons and aliens who were right all along, etc. The propaganda was introduced subtly enough for most people that they never noticed it and now they eat it right up.

This is when you know your game was made by shitpster developers with bloated egos.
You should always be hungry for more story and get excited to see it, vs dreading it.

Yeah but unless you wanna play Tetris and Jezzball all day (which wouldn't be that bad cool games) storylines add a lot if done right. Take Bad Mojo for example.
