Hopefully this will lead to a lot less shovelware being produced, and the talented developers that do want to make games can use Godot or other Free Software engines.
What's the word on Godot, I'm looking at giving it a try.

Is there anything of this nature I should be careful about regarding it or is the positive buzz I've been hearing genuine?

I hear a lot of good things about it. The general consensus is that it is easier to use than Unity, but was lacking in regards to it's 3D capabilities for a while. With the recent 4.0 update however, that seems to have massively improved. A lot of games use the engine, and it's bound to increase in popularity and speed of development after this fiasco.

Unity is already closing down their offices, the official reason is "death threats".

A lot of employees have signed resignation letters too.

San Francisco police told Polygon that officers responded to Unity’s San Francisco office “regarding a threats incident.” A “reporting party” told police that “an employee made a threat towards his employer using social media.” The employee that made the threat works in an office outside of California, according to the police statement.

Should probably consider Haxe as well if you are switching.

Does that mean they've reversed their policy? There was a a lot of talk about this in the Japanese indiesphere as well but I haven't been keeping up recently.

It's way too late, any games in development using Unity will finish using it then move to something else.
Only thing that might save Unity is making the engine open source under dual-license commercial/GPL

Not so sure, indie devs are pretty big ***** and Unity has done things just as bad in the past. Considering buying some shares while they are near $30.

What I'm reading seems to suggest that they haven't. Instead their trying to assure their current user base that the new policy will only effect an upgraded version of their engine which will be available sometime in 2024.

Catching that falling knife at $30.60 was painful. But now it's up 6% from where I bought it less than 2 months ago. :smug:
