The Platinum Shop Opens!

Post by rusty_shackleford »

:wizard2:

Now that i have nearly everything knocked off my RPGHQ TODO list, near the very bottom was taking care of this.
Previously, when you bought HQ Platinum I had to manually process it and give out a couple awards in return for purchasing membership. I've written about this for a while but I wanted to shift it towards an automatic process with a currency for you guys to buy cool stuff. So for each penny spent, you get 0.01 plat, which in turn can be used to buy the current year's piggy, buttons, and who knows what else may eventually be added. You can also send plats to other users if you want.

Currently, you can acquire the 2026 Citrine Piggy and the Salute reaction. By default, reactions are enabled and profile flairs have to manually enabled. You can do so from the shop's inventory page.

platinum
plat-store

These can also be found at the top of any page on RPGHQ with the other standard header link-buttons.

I still have some polishing to do tomorrow across these: showing the amount of plats you have on the shop page, using 'shop' instead of 'store', linking to the shop on the platinum management page, categorizing items on the shop, etc.,

Let me know if you guys have any issues, suggestions, criticisms, or encounter bugs!

Thank you to everyone that has purchased platinum to help keep RPGHQ operational.

To clarify, no plat from before carries forward?

You should give them the currency and then add a reaction to the store for 30-45 plats, so they can show off. Maybe the long-requested puke reaction...?

It doesn't count the old way I was doing piggies before. There should be no difference functionally.

But it's also still on sale if you bought it from the store, you just can't buy it again(nothing happens), I'll fix that tomorrow.

Well, it's the same as before, just showing you what you get in advance, no? Of course everything you already have you still have, and you can still buy more than you need to.
I don't really get it. Only benefit seem to be automated process. Risk seems to be that the platinum could get more valuable in the sense that Rusty starts to sell actually annoying ****.
I trust the plan. Rusty is a sensible guy.

Nothing annoying will be added. Buttons, including platinum buttons, have to undergo an informal approval process(no significant opposition + enough people support)

Well, a question I have is:

Let's say someone spends 100 bucks a month, manually, per the pay what you want option (not that I plan to, just to take the wind out of your sails before they get too inflated), he get's the citrine piggy and the salute obviously. He stops paying in December this year.
Does he have platinum left to buy whatever for the next x years (x being however much what he paid this year can afford into the future)?

Then Oyster has a point tbh.
I personally don't care about any rewards, but if I did, I'm sure I could afford piggies for the next 10 years from what I would theoretically have left over.
Just saying, This might feel unjust to those who actually are tight on money.

I also think the piggies should only be purchasable with platinum bought in the corresponding year.
But whatever, I know monetization is required, but this somehow feels wrong and too convoluted compared to how intransparent, yet at the same time personable it was before.
Don't take this the wrong way, I don't really care, just saying what I feel about it.
HQ is home either way.

Philanthropy isn't a god given right.

Just set it up how you think it should work. This site's success is largely due to your intuition about what people need, not just your ability to execute.

I think the only problems that I have left with this forum are:

1. anything that follows an "@" in a copy-paste with be send to the next row. This is really annoying when you try to add something from X, but I suspect from other places as well.
2. you have to go to Board Index for the Notifications to refresh and show properly.

Otherwise this is a great forum. I really enjoy it.

As far as recommendations go, I would suggest running this place like you have so far, which is with Christian morality. That means worship Christ, not money. And that means that leadership is self-sacrificial, kind and charitable and not a exercising power.
If you keep running things this way, I'm sure Santa will give you something every year and keep your mods from going onto other webzones and annoying the people there, like we've seen some people do...

Thanks, @fork
Anyone else have an opinion on this?
*It would be nice if the amounts from any previous purchases "bought" the current items at a early adopter discount (5-20%?), and any remainder was allocated as plat balance.
Can't see why:
- New user spends $50, gets both items, currently has a 20pl remaining balance.
- Previous user spent $50, has both items, but currently has 0pl balance.
(Above amounts are just example)
I don't see why future supporters should benefit more than previous, surely it would normally be the other way around?
But of course, if someone sent so little that there wouldn't be any remainder after buying the current two items (even with a % early adopter discount) then I wouldn't expect any. This would just be for those who previously spent enough, that they would have a remainder if they bought today.
This would of course be a one-off, just for any previous supporters who bought before platshop launch day.

*It would also be cool to have current items be listed in the "inventory". (With any historical ones marked as such).

*Move the $ HQ Platinum button next to the Plat shop button. And add a link to the HQ Platinum / Buy Plat page from the Plat Shop page. (Or just list Plat itself as the first buyable item at the left, which navigates to the Buy Plat page on select).

*Add collapsible category headings to support future purchases. Cosmetics/Flares, Reactions, ModHQ stuff, etc.

*I like the ability to gift plat to another user.

*@Oyster Sauce suggestion of Mod highlights is cool (make sure that any user can buy it for any mod!) that promotes a mod ("game\title") either in a dismissable forum announcement, or maybe even as a ModHQ logo comment, akin to the RPGHQ ones. (Allow all users to Opt Out of seeing these, if done as an "announcement". OR just show them only on the ModHQ pages).

*Maybe "Tip a moderator", could be an item? Gives them a  emote in the logo, with who it's from (seen only by the moderator) or something.

*If you ever have lots (other than Plat) allow selecting multiple items and an "add to basket" / checkout functionality.

*Can't really see the point of separate "Details" and "Buy" buttons, currently. If the above "add to basket" is implemented, get rid of the "Buy" button and make it "Select" instead.

Also, how many Rusties in a Plat?

I agree with not going Megajew. But at the same time, ThoughtsAndPrayers don't pay for a forum.

If I understand right, the way it's currently set up encourages one time donation rather than monthly or yearly subscriptions. Some purchases should be permanent, like the piggies, but you'll want some things that renew. Maybe the reactions (don't hurt me @Kalarion!) or the colored name?

Of course, I may be reading it incorrectly.

Fundamentally, there's not meant to be a difference. The entire point of the change was just to make things clearer and not have to rely on manual processing. I guess before you did get all platinum reactions when you bought platinum, but… there was only one.
