I haven't played it myself yet, but I know someone who has and they've said it's excellent.
Btw, is the 3rd Troika games game any good?
I don't think I've ever seen it mentioned.
The combat is pretty bad; a lot of thrash mob encounters, but on the bright side a lot of those are optional, and if you have the right build, you can use realtime combat to more or less go through them on autopilot. The real enjoyment in Arcanum was never the combat, though, so I say you should give it a try for the atmosphere, worldbuilding, build freedom, and to uncover the evil gnome plot of course.Maledict wrote: ↑ Yesterday, 17:59How does the Arcanum gameplay hold up? I've never tried it, but I've been reading on races, and at first half-ogres and half-orcs seemed cool, and then I've read about the elven racism, and I believe I would enjoy playing as an elf. 2 of the portraits also look a lot like me, which further grows my desire, as I find it rare to be able to have the protagonist look more like me.

It's a bit like the opposite of Arcanum: very good combat, but the other areas of the game are inferior in comparison. Like with all of Troika, it's a bit of a rough gem.
It's one of the best rpgs ever made, especially if you like reactivity. Now, many people will tell you the combat is terrible, but it's actually not that different from Fallout 1. Don't try to play in real-time, though.

Very good. It's the cleanest example of the D&D 3.5 rules in a game currently available. Don't bother with the Steam version, though. It adds some tweaks that the Co8 modders added and they weren't especially happy with how it turned out. It also doesn't work extremely well with Temple+ from what I've heard, and you'll definitely want that. Just get the GOG version - I think the SNEG version is what shows up in the store now, but it includes the original. Just install that one and if you want to use the Co8 mod, fine. Definitely install Temple+ though so it will run well on an OS newer than XP.

None of this makes much sense to me, but I assume it will once I get it. Old games run just fine on Linux.
Is there any racism in the game to be had?

Maybe the first one? The KotC 2 adds more for certain. In any case, either of them are pretty consistent with those rules. KotC is basically a series of encounters though. ToEE is more like a campaign.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ Yesterday, 18:35I thought KotC games were closer?Acrux wrote: ↑ Yesterday, 18:25It's the cleanest example of the D&D 3.5 rules in a game currently available.
Also, it's the only CRPG set in Greyhawk. So it wins in my view just on that.
