There are not many great Japanese made games that do not have the anime aesthetic, sorry. That's just going to limit you to Final Fantasy, Monster Hunter Wilds, and maybe FromSoft games. Lost Odyssey and The Last Remnant have a lot of issues.
I would strongly recommend mainline Final Fantasy games 7 through 15, including 14 which is more of a 500+ hour long story heavy JRPG/VN hybrid than an MMO. I would ignore 11 as it sucks as a JRPG experience and should really be experienced as an MMO like on the Horizon private server.
In particular, I would say that the standouts are 9, 10, 13, 14, and 15.
9 is high octane for the first two discs and first few hours of disc 3. By the time it begins to lose steam when you return to Lindblum, you mind as well tough it out to the end. Great audiovisuals. After FF14, it is the next mainline FF game that most successfully juggles a large cast of characters.
10 provides a tight story and great audiovisuals and a unique setting. Every character is unique mechanically. Auron can shatter heavy armor. Tidus is fast enough to hit fast moving wolves who will dodge Auron. Wakka can hit flying enemies. Lulu can cast elemental magicks and target elemental weaknesses. Yuna can heal, and can also summon different elemental summons that also tank damage for the party. Etc. It does sag a little in the middle.
I am very hesitant to recommend 12 because while it has the best cutscene/movie direction in the series and an outstanding English localization, the actual combat presentation is very lackluster. Characters are not well defined. Combat and character building was not very enjoyable. I didn't like hiking through the labyrinthine dungeons. Etc. Main cast is dry. Soundtrack is noisy. Etc. It's overall good but not my first recommendation.
FF13 has amazing audiovisuals. You hike through so many beautiful crazy artbook fantasy environments. Designs generally look great. This has the most fun ATB combat system in the series in terms of visual presentation and ease/stressfree input of commands (as opposed to say FF7R where I never felt like I had a handle on things, didn't look quite as good, etc). Main issue is that the battle system is designed for a full party of 3 and a fully unlocked ATB gauge, but you don't get both until about 30 to 40 hours in. Play with the Steam modding graphics guide to make it look even better.
FF14: It's a 500+ hour long JRPG/VN in which your customizeable main character gets to be the star of the show. Lots of great moments, both tense and comedy. The characters are very well realized, perhaps the most real feeling after FF15's cast. Very immersive setting. Main problem is that the base game story is uninspiring and it was not until the ARR patches that I began to become invested. English dub for ARR is also lackluster, but then at Heavensward they moved to voice recording studio to London and recasted everyone and it improves tremendously. Unfortunately there is zero talent or build or ability customization, and almost all of the challenge has been scrubbed out of the story experience. Game is currently free up through the Shadowbringers expansion, so that is 300+ hours of the story and content. Make sure to do the major sidequestlines as they unlock such as Omega, Ivalice raids, etc. Starting with the Shadowbringers expansion, the "side" questlines stop being "side" and start being continuations of the main story.
FF15: most endearing and well realized party in the series. The rest of the game is rough but it absolutely succeeds at making you feel for them in a way that most games don't.
If you are open to the best JRPGs on Steam with an anime aesthetic, then I would recommend:
Trails series (namely Trails in the Sky FC, Trails of Cold Steel, and maybe the Calvard Trails games).
Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4
Granblue Fantasy and Granblue Fantasy Relink
Aselia the Spirit of Eternity Sword
World End Economica
As for great JRPGs that are not on Steam, I would recommend:
Xenoblade Chronicles 1 (play the 3DS or Wii versions with the original aesthetics)
Suikoden 1 and 2 (emulate, do not play the Steam demasters)
Sakura Wars 1 and 2
Pokemon Black & White
