Delta Green | Cthulhu Meets X-Files | HQ Saves(!) The World?! | (4) Agents Wanted!

Post by Crowned Puppet »

"The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown." - H. P. Lovecraft

Welcome, Agents, to Delta Green! What is Delta Green, you might ask? It’s a roleplaying game about a super-secret government program by the same name, taking place in the world of H. P. Lovecraft. The Program’s origin comes from the story The Shadow Over Innsmouth when federal agents stormed the cursed coastal village in 1928, rounding up the locals and firing torpedoes at the Deep One city off the Massachusetts coast. Since then, they’ve been involved in Second World War, Roswell incident and Cold War, just to name a few. It’s existed in several forms for almost hundred years now. Delta Green isn’t officially recognized as a program by the government in any shape or form. Player characters - the aforementioned Agents - come from various alphabet soup departments such as FBI, CIA, DEA. Others might be military, active or retired. Some even might be civilians--computer experts, attorneys, journalists, doctors or other people who’ve not only encountered the unnatural, but have the skills to combat it. Agents might not even know each others' real names.

So, in other words;
Image

And even within the pressurized folds of Delta Green there are secrets. Agents must keep operations from their family, their jobs, and, worse, from other agents. The impact of these secrets can be devastating. Divorce, job loss, lawsuits, criminal prosecution, or worse. You are part of a conspiracy. You will be expected to break every law and personal code to perform the mission and, just as important, to cover it up.

There is no quarter taken or given. If you are arrested or humiliated in the media, nobody from the group can help. And if you reveal the Program’s secrets, no matter the circumstances, you become the operation.

With our introduction out of the way, let’s talk about how you can create your character.

Image

You can check this great document for a quick rundown of the game, which explains Bonds, Character Creation, Rolling Dice and so forth, or this amazing character creator for a thorough experience with the character creation wizard. I myself played Delta Green only once and never Handled for Agents, so the game will (hopefully) be simple, like a test run. Here are bunch of flowcharts/cheat sheets for Combat and Sanity rolls, but we’ll get there when we get there. :smug:
► Combat
► Sanity
First come first serve, we need 4 Agents to start us off with! Post in this thread if you want to join, then send a filled character sheet, and we'll start when we have enough disposable asse- I mean, valued members of the Program. :smug: Here are some pre-generated example characters that could inspire you.

I'm a big fan of Delta Green so PbP version sounds interesting. What time period will the game take place in? What are the handler's preferences on player's verbosity? What letter will be used for agent's codenames or will it be decided later?

Modern day, 2020s.
As long as it fits the mood of the general game, you can use many colorful words!
For your third question,
► Show Spoiler
but if people want to have codename letters, we can rule zero it and give something to people!

Definitely not, I wouldn't recommend dumping any stat to 3. Especially Charisma, where Bonds is a vital mechanic that lets you cope against the unfathomable horrors you'll face.

13,13,12,12,11,11 (Generalist)

15,14,12,11,10,10 (Focused)

17,14,12,12,10,9 (Highly Focused)

statlines would be my suggestion. Don't think the stats as numbers, but a person! Additionally, if the stat is below 9 or above 12, it stands out in some way. Write an adjective or a short description to illustrate it, like broad shouldered, athletic, weak, ugly, so on.

Sorry, I can't view this .pdf, "message": "File with such name does not exist."

But motivations being empty is... well, everyone should have motivations in their lives. Maybe you want to get that promotion? Go to a live World Cup game? Visit North Korea? Plan a honeymoon with your spouse? Think what makes your character tick, what drives them forward if you will.

Empty inventory is fine. There is a "Tools of the Trade" section where your character is expected to bring with them some items everywhere such as a Light pistol or an encrypted phone, but I can say more certain things when I can view your character :P

No motivations, history or inventory yet. 4 bonds per anthropologist profession, bond ratings are default (change?).

Alright. We have our Agents! With that, we can start our game.

Prologue
April 17th, 2023. 8:00 AM. It started as mundane as any other day.

A university professor grading papers in his office. A marine interdiction agent writing a report on the last cargo ship he intercepted. A CIA operator grabbing coffee from a cart on the street. An FBI agent tidying his desk. Four different lives, four different men, each unaware of the others. At 9:05 AM sharp, every one of the government agents learns from their supervisor that they've been unexpectedly assigned to a joint terrorism task force--one so restricted that even their day-to-day supervisors aren't permitted to ask about it. Each is handed a manila envelope.

The professor isn't spared the same fate. A firm knock at his office door, an absent-minded "enter", and the open door reveals a middle-aged man in an immaculate suit, the same envelope tucked under his arm. Every once in a while, he scratches his cheek scarred with chickenpox.

Image

You each take the folder. You all knew where it came from. Finding a place where you're certain no one can even glance at the document, you open it and begin reading the instructions the Program has prepared for you. The first thing that catches your eye: plane tickets, reserved under your names, departing at 3:00 PM.

► Show Spoiler

You have to come up with your own excuses to leave your jobs and families behind. Feel free to talk about what your travel arrangements might look like. Professor, if you have questions for the Man in Black, now is your chance. Agents, your supervisors don't know anything about the Program, so your questions will have to wait. If you want to roll something, say so.

I assume that asking a messenger for a clarification is useless and, after a polite "do you want some coffee" and expected negative, wave him away.

Then I read the doc until 930, put some notes about it on random pages in my notebook, tear into small pieces and flush it down the toilet, finish grading at 1000, get home at 1100 to pack things.
I message Amelia that I got a sudden invitation to a conference and will be away for a weekend. I know that I have no lessons at 20th or 21st, so everything should be fine at the job front. Besides, I have a tenure. I check that I packed some of my research notebooks to spend time with and at 1300 I go on my way to the airport. 2 hours should be enough to get there with ample time for check-in.

I dispose of my briefing by having it shredded with a pile of other classified documents and placing the shreddings in a burn bag for routine destruction.

Getting out of work for 48-72 hours would be a lot easier over a weekend. Suppressing my irritation, I decide to ask for last-minute permission to attend an industry-related conference starting tomorrow and going through Wednesday for Continuing Education requirements. Being gone for half a week shouldn't bother my boss too much. It's a bit shaky and will fall apart immediately under scrutiny... but Danforth understands I'm seconded to an organization that he can't know much about and may require me at a moment's notice. He'll keep mum and help me cover. The Agency should have been a bit more considerate of its scheduling if it didn't want me dealing with potential messes at work.

Janet shouldn't be a problem. She's not curious about my work, and I don't generally schedule time with her during the work week... this week is no exception. Just another short trip away from home, as far as she's concerned.

All that taken care of, I pack my standard air travel go kit and head to the airport to catch my flight. I'm not too worried about gear on location. The Agency knows what I like to have on-hand to work with, they'll have what I need waiting for me.

I light my brief on fire with a match, making sure there are no remains left. I write a small note for my family, My wife atleast knows that my work involves me leaving for a good chunk of time, explaining that i will be gone for about a week at the most. After writing the note i start packing, preferring to travel light, since most of my gear will be supplied by the agency.

The last thing i do is to call up my Handler at the CIA, telling him that i'd not be in town for a while. i do this by the time im at the airport and ready to board. Since im technically a contractor and not part of the agency itself, i should be able to disappear for a week at maximum before they'd come searching for me. Hearing boarding call, i board and try and get some sleep on the plane.

To ensure a smooth experience for all the players, I will take control of the any unanswering players after the 3-day period of my post, just for the remainder of that specific scene, and try to play them as accordingly as possible.
