What's also annoying is the weirdly stylised "comic" art and graphics style plus the a bit strange and wrong looking weapons and armour. The previous games didn't look like that and the equipment while not always being accurate or at last anachronistic looked far better.
Sad. I really liked the previous games for what they were, even with the women and ****** problems in them.

As I was just arguing the other day, stylized has become more common than realism and it did not make the games look any better as was often implied it would by proponents.Reichspepe wrote: β June 7th, 2026, 09:36What's also annoying is the weirdly stylised "comic" art and graphics style plus the a bit strange and wrong looking weapons and armour. Couldn't agree more. As so often, it is a matter of a case by case basis. Many stylised graphics games just have bad art style. Some look amazing even to this day with the prime example of the earlier WOW iterations, at least for me. Compare those to the way WOW looks nowadays and it makes me want to pluck my eyes out, even though it's by far not the worst that exists today. Dragon Age Origins also still looks good talking about stylised, just as Mass Effect 3 (if we're going with the original release) does for realistic. Another example would be the first Life is Strange games which I think looked great. Now cue Mixtape or the black swamp girl voodoo witch game I already forgot the name of and it's the same thing, very similar in style but just awful.rusty_shackleford wrote: β June 7th, 2026, 09:37As I was just arguing the other day, stylized has become more common than realism and it did not make the games look any better as was often implied it would by proponents.Reichspepe wrote: β June 7th, 2026, 09:36What's also annoying is the weirdly stylised "comic" art and graphics style plus the a bit strange and wrong looking weapons and armour. The same thing I find true for realistic graphics, with games like Witcher 3 or KCD being a sight to behold on the one hand and most egregiously in my opinion those countless Unreal Engine slop games that all look the same.

Now that you say it, probably true. It does look significantly cheaper than Expeditions Rome.wndrbr wrote: β June 7th, 2026, 11:14The stylization is probably because of the lower budget, not because the devs wanted it to be this way.

There's even plenty of 'realistic' games from the early 2000s that still look fantastic so the argument that they 'age poorly' is mostly bull. IME if you point it out they get called 'stylized' but they're stylized in the same way that a movie filmed in 1950 is considered stylized now due to the technology used β these games were absolutely considered to be 'realistic' by contemporary standards.Reichspepe wrote: β June 7th, 2026, 10:54The same thing I find true for realistic graphics, with games like Witcher 3 or KCD being a sight to behold on the one hand and most egregiously in my opinion those countless Unreal Engine slop games that all look the same.
e.g., Unreal II

If you check contemporary reviews, many will include the word "realistic" relating to graphics.
If you want to go even further where realistic somehow excludes games like that, Call of Duty(2003) is the most clearcut example of an old realistic game. And it looks great.

These games aged well because they had good artistic craftsmanship behind them to the point where they ended up looking stylized to a modern audience. You can outsource "stylized" art assets to Vindaloo just as easy as "realistic" assets, and indeed, the mobile world has been doing it for almost two decades now. WoW's artstyle was basically patient zero for getting raped by mobile games.

Great points. And you're absolutely right about those old games. They still look quite good.rusty_shackleford wrote: β June 7th, 2026, 11:24There's even plenty of 'realistic' games from the early 2000s that still look fantastic so the argument that they 'age poorly' is mostly bull. Games used to aim for hyper realism and still have their own immediately identifiable style, even if you account for things like lighting. Two artists trying to make a very real looking guy would texture hair differently or render individual teeth in a weird way or use different methods to make the skin look like it's refracting light. A bunch of those things combined gave games their own unique look. They are stylized realism.rusty_shackleford wrote: β June 7th, 2026, 11:24There's even plenty of 'realistic' games from the early 2000s that still look fantastic so the argument that they 'age poorly' is mostly bull. With modern games and modern engines, arr rook same. You could model swap these characters into eachothers' games with no issues.
Of all historic periods and locations in our vast world they could choose from they picked Japan for their next game.
βΊ Show Spoiler
Sigh... yet another supposed historical game setting with the population diversity of a downtown Los Angeles abortion clinic. Bold move, Cotton.
wow it looks terrible
thankfully it seems pretty universal so they might change the portraits at least, but I doubt they're gonna revamp the models
1000% it's gonna be more libtarded than rome
what is with all these ****** devs making the medical companions nigresses recently
