How does this compare to Dragon Quest? I like 11 and the 1-3 remakes

It doesn't because Crystal Project (just realize what the acronym is, great) has had like 5 minutes of dialogue reading in the 12 hours I've played so far. it's pure gameplay and exploration

If you're looking for a game that is just "good JRPG mechanics: the game", then you'll enjoy it. But that's all it is

How does this compare to Dragon Quest?

I played some of the original.
It does not compare at all to Dragon Quest.
It is very basic and the first few hours I experienced had no real main quest.
It's basically one long grind levelling and looking for treasure and secrets like the crystals scattered about.
There are places you can't get to until later when you have improved movement capabilities.
