Games where revenge isn't some gay life lesson

Post by Tweed »

Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves and make sure to fill one with the smart *** who quotes this at you. If there's one thing I hate it's revenge stories where either you or one of your companions gets a chance at revenge and turns out to be the wrong choice or completely ruins them.

Starting with a scene from one of the most iconic revenge games:

FRANKIE the BAT NIAGRA | MAX PAYNE

What are some examples where revenge is sweet and well deserved?

Octopath Traveller 0. One of the three villains, Auguste, seduced Schwartz's wife and then killed her. You help Schwartz kill Auguste.

Shadow of Mordor

The game starts with you and your family being murdered by orcs. You spend the rest of the game mass murdering and enslaving orcs.
Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Fallout New Vegas is a classic one. Feels great to return the bullet you were kindly given at the start. You can also help Boone get revenge over his wife's traficking.

While not a main point in ATOM RPG, you do get robbed clean of all your belongings at the beginning of the game. You can coincidentally meet your assailants again later on, and man payback felt good.

Tangent: I've noticed that revenge stories used to be about enacting physical violence and natural justice. But today revenge fantasies that youtube serves up or things people say in comments all center around paperwork vengeance, where the consequence is monetary and enforced by a judge. Like people can't even imagine righting a wrong themselves in their own fantasies.

In season 2 of Telltale's The Walking Dead, there is a scene where a major antagonist that tortured and killed several people over the past few episodes finally gets captured by your group of survivors. As your group debates what to do with him, one of your comrades, who himself was cripplingly mangled by this man, leaves no room for argument: He dies here, now, beaten to a pulp.
You can approve and watch the beating or denounce him and leave him to do the deed alone, while the other characters pretty unanimously scold his decision, and yours if you agree with him. It's one of those moments where you can explicitly tell the typically sanctimonious "revenge bad!" people to take a hike.

Might add to it that you are assuming the role of a girl that is underage and the pregnant niggerlady that ****** the bad guy talks over you and wants you to go with her since Clem is just a kid but Clementine can say " No I'm staying" if you choose it.

I found Telltale Walking Dead season 2 to be so unlikeable to go through. Every character is swearing, and so many of the characters are detestable, people having casual sex, etc. It was very sobering to see how games like these were so popular.

Honorable mention for Radament's Lair in Diablo 2. Atma's dialogue after completing the quest shows she's rather happy that you killed the mummy.

DA:O gives you the option to roleplay a revenge path against Loghain. I remember hating that guy with a passion as a kiddo.

Not related to the topic or the Six Seven meme, but I really like the detail that you can hear the song Late Goodbye blaring through his headphones.

Saints Row 2 fits since everyone who fucks the boss over gets killed horribly. You even get revenge on the guy who put you in a coma in the first game.

I think Fable 1 did let you avenge your village against that Jack guy with a mask. Even if you have to sacrifice your sister otw maybe or it was just to get his sword no idea anymore. Does that count as a gay life lesson?

I'd say so. Sounds like a typical "revenge will leave you with nothing" plot.
I haven't played Fable in like 15 years, though.

nah, the sister sacrifice was tied to Jack's sword. You can just discard his sword and that would be it - Jack's defeated, sister's alive.

He's portrayed as The Great Evil you must save Albion from, so sadly the revenge aspect is minimal in that story. Killing him is mandatory in order to stop him from conquering the world or something.
Sacrificing your sister just gives you an omega sword of doom (evil choice)
