Older games seem much more willing to assume that the party has various levels of knowledge and have a character explain things to another member of the party as a way of informing the player.
I think this became less common as the viewpoint shifted from the player controlling the main character to the player being the main character in RPGs.
Also as party size shrank and party composition became more fixed.

RPGs where main character is an amnesiac
Because it allows them to lazily explain the rules of the world to the player through the memory-deficient protagonist instead of a ******** one.Tweed wrote: ↑ May 5th, 2026, 19:17I think the Japs really love the amnesia bit a lot more than the west does.
