Ephemeral multiplayer: Play alone, together

Post by rusty_shackleford »

I had this in my drafts for about a year and decided to post it rather than just delete it. It's unfinished, I can't remember what else I was going to add. I think it being unfinished kind of fits the theme, very somber. :turtle:
"Ephemeral multiplayer" refers to the idea that you are briefly sharing the same digital space as one or more people, with minimal interaction.
I don't think there's a term for this, but it's probably in more than one game you've played. It can be positive or negative depending on how it got there. If there is a term for it, I'll change the title.

I was playing an online RPG in solo self-found mode and my experience with the game was enhanced by seeing other players in the world despite not actually interacting with them. I'm not sure why. I was playing it very much like a singleplayer game.
On the other hand, I've played MMORPGs that felt like this and it [editor's note: This was left unfinished]

The dork souls games and similar get into this a bit with sharing messages. I believe there's a daggerfall mod(or someone was working on one?) that had multiplayer inns, so you could go to an inn and interact with other players there, but nowhere else.
Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Does Dragons Dogma pawn system count?

FF14 also feels like this most of the time even if it doesn't actually apply

I agree "together alone time" is a thing that humans benefit from and enjoy. I don't think the term "ephemeral" captures that in a way that helps people understand it in the same way as other terms for multiplayer games.

"Co-operative multiplayer"
"Online multiplayer"
"Local/Couch multiplayer"
"Hotseat multiplayer"

Perhaps something like "Together-alone multiplayer"?

"Solo multiplayer"? Might sound too much like the writer having a stroke.

Apparently there's a term in psychology for this called "parallel play", which I think could work. Or cram it into the template as "Parallel (play) multiplayer".

I think it can get close, especially since pawns can learn from other players and then use what they learned to guide you in quests and etc., I know this is in DD2, dunno if it's in 1.
It's a neat system I'd really like to see expanded.

Wasn't Myst: Uru like this? I seem to remember it having some sort of "hands-off" online component like that.

What about "Ambient Multiplayer" as a term? It's there like background noise; you don't really interact with it but the world feels more alive with it.

I like that term better than ephemeral or parallel. Plus being downstream of the APA is not somewhere I really want to be.

I like the chart that shows you what % of players did what each chapter in Detroit. You can even toggle it to your friend list specifically.
