What’s your favorite fighting game?

Post by Maxlofla-32 »

It can be any fighting genre, whether it’s one-on-one fighter, a tag-team style game, a brawler, or even a beat ’em up. What makes it your favorite? You can hate fighting games as a whole if you want I’m just curious.

Street Fighter 2 Turbo because I have very limited experience with fighting games and I'm most nostalgic for that one

Honorable mention to Ehrgeiz even though it's a **** fighting game it was still a lot of fun at the time and the quest mode was really fun too

Ain't nothing better than destroying footsies with parries and having a diabolical corner pressure in your arsenal. 3rd strike is the best fighting game and it's not even close.

I've got a soft spot for Tekken 3 too. Both games have insanely good soundtracks and a well selected and memorable cast of fighters that overshadow anything I've seen from the recent instalments in the series.

I feel I've never gotten deep enough into the genre to pick a legitimate favorite, but I've enjoyed a few. Most recently (which is not that recently anymore) it was Guilty Gear XX AC+R. May is fun.

Best of the Best (aka Panza Kickboxing on PC/Amiga) lets you choose your own moves from a list of 55 kickboxing moves. The control method is interesting too. You don't need to do the usual Street Fighter / Mortal Kombat style combos. Each move is assigned to a direction and then the same directions again with a button held does different moves. It gives 13 moves. So it's easy to play but hard to master. I like that it is real fighting too, no hadooknes and stuff.

I also used to play a lot of MK4 ages ago. I was a bit obsessed with it, used to take out all my anger in that game. I'd like to play more fighting games but they take a long time to get good at and none of them grab me enough. I wish there were more realistic fighting games.

Neither! Marie Rose :3
On a more serious note, I like the triangle system (attacks > throws > holds > attacks) and the depth that comes with it.
Pretty good game.

Melee. I moved away after that generation and never had a group of splitscreen friends ever again. Ultimate might be better but I don't want to play with strangers.

I played Melee with my friends in school and then played the later releases with my brother-in-law and our friends. Ultimate is fun and the bigger roster is nice. Compfags would surely say Melee is better, but I never learned how to wavedash (and I did try, briefly), so I like both.

GET READY TO CRUUUUMBLEEEE!

I quite liked Clayfighter 63 due to the aesthetics, and the fights having you move through large complexes like factories with conveyor belts in the background or castle and the multiple different chambers. It gave a more epic feel to the proceedings.

Runnerup would be playing Smash Bros with friends on N64/GameCube/Wii. Huge roster so there is probably someone in there you will like, and a wide variety of stages. Easy to pickup and have fun.

I liked GuiltyGear's and Granblue Fantasy's world, but I just can't get into those more traditional tryhard fighters.

DBZ Budokai 3
Was huge during my teenage years and was one of the go to games at my boarding school (isolated place in the mountains so couldnt exactly pop down to the shop for latest vidya, stuff like that we had to import including tvs which we did because we were teens).
Simple control scheme to pick up, lots of flashy fan service movies, 10/10 ost (half of which i hear were plagiarized alas which means that past a certain point they rereleased the game with a much worst ost even if legit) great for playing when drunk.
Single player mode was also fun and thank goodness because the amount of times someone accidentally deleted my save forcing me to replay the entire thing to unlock 100% of stuff all over again is considerable.

DBZ Budokai 3 OST - Kenji Yamamoto - The Ultimate Energy(The Best DBZ Song Ever!!!!!!)

Second place goes to OG Soul Blade
Again, simple control scheme that made sense to me, i don't like to struggle with complex inputs. Soul blade is also more combo focused so feels rythmic especially combined with how you move around fluidly.
Icing on the cake that stuck with me though was the single player modes, loved soul edge mode in this one, no sequel game ever came close to being as fun for whatever reason.
Then you had the ost, 10/10, which had ANOTHER ost, the khan super arranged versions, no idea what its about, but its double the good OSTS and you could switch between them at will.

Anyways there was this one desert level with a day and night system, fighting a mate on it to the OST was definitely a memory.
Soul Blade Khan Super Session Yellow Sands (Theme of Hwang) Its not even that amazing of a song but it synergised perfectly with the level.
It would be all dramatic and stuff as we fought to the movement of the stars and the music because really fighting is just ballet for dudes.

Honorable 3rd place goes to Mk9 or Doa2

There we go, just what I was going to post. 3rd strike. Main is Akuma and secondary Hugo. Second runner up for me would be Mortal Kombat 3. Kitana main with secondary being Kabal/Reptile. Played a lot of WWF Wrestlefest, Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game and Clay Fighter as Val mentioned when I was younger. Think I was the only kid I knew for years that had or played Clay Fighter.

Def Jam: Fight for New York. It was made by former Aki devs, the guys behind No Mercy and WCW vs NWO. The game was basically their swan song. The gameplay imo is flawless. Easy to pick up and play but has a learning curve. The story mode has an actually interesting narrative and in depth character creation/customization.

Absolute kino game

I don't know much about the devs but I do know at least some of them under a new name are who made the Yakuza PSP spinoff Kurohyo games which the first one is really good and has similar combat

I played a bit of Guilty Gear, Tekken, Mortal Kombat growing up. Actually played the **** out of Tekken 3 4 and 5 but skipped 6 and 7. When Tekken 8 released nostalgia hit hard so I played for a fun few months.

While I do enjoy these 2D Fighters, I remember prefering the 3D fighters like the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm and DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi games, although admittedly I haven't played those in over a decade. I understand the consensus is there's less depth to the competitive aspect of these games, or they're less mechanically challenging or something and that's why they're less popular, but I really liked them growing up.

Of recent games, Sifu also looks mighty fun but I haven't tried it out yet.

I quite liked playing Sasori. He had a unique play style of you controlling two characters at once: Sasori as a ranged character, and then his puppet that you send up into the face of the other guy and try to block his movements to prevent him from reach Sasori. I wish more games had done that.

Or stuff like Deidara where his gimmick was the stupid ranged bomber birds, so the real challenge to the enemy was reaching him in the first place. It did make for some more interesting encounters depending on the chosen combatants. :pipe-thinking:

Was trying to find this game name out for better part of an hour now lol. Anyone remember or play "World Heroes" 1 or 2? I recall this way back as a kid too, not sure if I had a copy on a console or just rented it. After looking at the roster I don't recall what character I liked to play as though.

GameCube Smash Bros.

Default settings, random stages. Mitigating randomness is part of the skillset.

I havent really played any since the PS2 era and the controllers back then ruined my thumbs if I played them too long.

But like Val already mentioned the first two which come to my mind are Clayfighter and Streetfighter 2 for the snes. I guess smash bros for the N64 was also pretty good. Most of the combos in tekken and mortal combat were just too much to remember for me if you dont play these games like a fanatic.

I just recalled now as well with the N64 mention: "Fighting Force". I remember this girl that was in my grade that had 2 brothers that lived near me maybe 2 minutes away and the 4 of us would play Fighting Force after school all the time. It's a Beat'em up and not a Fighting game but ****, that was a nice memory trigger lol.

The Soul Calibur series. Easily the best imo.

My favorite "obscure" one, though? Eternal Champions (on Sega Genesis and Sega CD)
