There is no best singular game ever made. There are A LOT of great games, and then different people have their favorites.

I don't know about best game ever made, but Portal and Sonic 3 + Knuckles are both flawless games. They aren't my favorites though.

You ask in jest, but I've always felt like PC gamers in specific consider Half Life 2 to be The Great One for some reason, not that I ever played it

It is all personal taste. I don't like most of the popular games. Also the games I loved the most I couldn't really call the best because they have so many problems. Everquest was maybe the most I liked a game but it has as many bad parts as good. If I had to pick a game objectively it would be too difficult. But I always felt like Unreal Tournament was probably up there. It's just so slick and well made and good to play. But it's impossible to pick. There are games that are really perfect but they are also much smaller. Is it better to be small and perfect or far bigger and more elaborate but with rough edges?

Are you a masochist? I have a theory about people who like Everquest (I'm one of them)anvi wrote: ↑ April 9th, 2026, 22:22Everquest was maybe the most I liked a game but it has as many bad parts as good.

Maybe, not really sure. I don't think so though because I never liked the harshness of EQ, I think it was too much. I liked it to a point and I liked the challenge. But mostly it just felt brutal and unreasonable. I was mostly attracted to the realtime combat which had RPG depth but you couldn't pause or anything. Doing something like soloing as a Necro or Enchanter and using Charm was really tense. But I also liked that the game was so big and deep. I felt like there was always more to do, more to see, more to learn. I also liked it being difficult because it kept out the riffraffGhostCow wrote: ↑ April 9th, 2026, 22:36Are you a masochist? But I liked THJ much more. I would prefer it was a bit harder and more like classic EQ, but overall I preferred being able to just run around and blow stuff up and do it in my own time without having to form groups and ****. And dying was a minor setback not a ball busting hour long pita. Something in between classic EQ and THJ would be my perfect game.

(Seriously, though, I wonder what game that would be nowadays?)
I ask this because when you ask 'whats the best movies ever made' most people would agree on lotr pretty quickly, which is fair
But when it comes to a best video game people are indecisive. Does it mean there's never been such a 'masterpiece' in the gaming industry?

Kingdom Come: Deliverance
I have finished it at least 9 times, it never gets old (except the DLC it sucks ***)

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Often ranked #1 (including on Metacritic). It set standards for 3D adventure games—targeting systems, open exploration, and storytelling.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Revolutionized open-world design with total freedom and emergent gameplay. A modern favorite.
Super Mario Bros.
One of the most influential games ever—basically defined platformers and helped revive the gaming industry.
Tetris
Simple, timeless, and endlessly replayable. Probably the most universally accessible “perfect” game.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Known for deep storytelling, rich world-building, and meaningful choices.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Praised for realism, narrative, and immersive open world.
Dark Souls
Hugely influential for its challenging gameplay and interconnected world design.
Story-focused? → The Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption 2
Gameplay innovation? → Breath of the Wild, Dark Souls
Historical impact? → Super Mario Bros., Tetris
Critical consensus? → Ocarina of Time still often tops lists
If you forced a consensus pick, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is probably the most commonly cited “greatest of all time” due to its lasting influence and near-perfect critical scores.
HL 2 is boring and a harbinger of decline. It set the trend for "cinematicool" FPS that Cowaduty eventually perfected and milked to infinity.Valter wrote: ↑ April 9th, 2026, 21:46You ask in jest, but I've always felt like PC gamers in specific consider Half Life 2 to be The Great One for some reason, not that I ever played it
Also, the best game ever made is either X-COM (1994) or Civilization 4 (2005).

I remember when Roger Ebert wrote his infamous blog post "Video games can never be art" (despite his having never played one), the response was pretty much unanimously that he had to play Shadow of the Colossus. People were offering to mail him their Playstations so he could play it. It seems to be a game almost everyone can agree is a masterpiece.
But that was back in 2012. Maybe now contrarian zoomers have decided to hate it
