What game are you playing?
Hollow Knight. I was resisting it for a long time, but now that I’m in I have to admit that it’s very good. One of the few souls likes that iterates past the surface level traits of Dark Souls. Only “problem” is that I accidentally did a sequence break and I have no idea where I’m supposed to be at this point.
Also playing the waccy’s Fantasia mod pack for Minecraft with a friend. I might have mentioned it before. Substantially changes the progression in a way that’s genuinely interactive, like needing to forge metal with special furnaces, tongs, and beating it on an anvil, all while managing a growing town.

I hate them.
It's the Pixel Remaster on Steam with these mods:
Final Fantasy VI Pixel Keeper (FF Record Keeper Sprites)
Archmage Reborn
Modern Weapon Pack
Uncensored Celes Intro Scene
Terra's Flashback Restored
Ted Woolsey Uncensored Edition Script - Magicite
FF6_OP_Magitek Armor
Opera English to other languages
UnityPlayer CRC Check Bypass (Updated v1.2.1)
With these mods (and playing it with the original soundtrack), it's probably my definitive version of the game. The only gripe I have is that the opera scene forces the new arranged score even with the og score toggled on. Celes' 'operatic' voice sounds terrible in English, so I used that mod to change it to French (my favourite version) while still keeping the English text.
Doing a no esper/magicite playthrough for a challenge.
I hate them.

Silksong, almost done with Act 3. It's a great game, the attention to detail and amount of content are insane. It's just a little too try-hard and taxing for an old man like me. I prefer Hollow Knight.

I'm playing Tyranny, 3 or 4 girlbosses encountered in 1 hour of gameplay, plus a city ruled by warrior queens in the prologue where you decide what you did in the beginning of the war, I wonder if it will be as bad as Pillars of Eternity II.

Been playing some bg3 and some dota2. I need a refresher from the particular taste of larian slop, so i'm switching to evil within and some tyranny.

Most of larian's catalogue is quite good if you haven't played it.Fitz wrote: ↑ April 20th, 2026, 20:44Been playing some bg3 and some dota2. I need a refresher from the particular taste of larian slop, so i'm switching to evil within and some tyranny.
Only games to skip are the weird RTS hybrid game and beyond divinity.
Rare example of an auteur game developer. You can see the same mechanics/ideas showing up 25 years earlier in less sophisticated forms.

Larian slop you can mostly fix with the mods the amazing people here are developing, Obsidian slop?Fitz wrote: ↑ April 20th, 2026, 20:44Been playing some bg3 and some dota2. I need a refresher from the particular taste of larian slop, so i'm switching to evil within and some tyranny.

I've been playing Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, felt I should play all Ezio games and that's the last one left, should've played it before though, the combat and stalking missions get worse and worse as time passes. Metro Exodus too (guess what, there's an asian girlboss singlehandedly defeating a small army), ok game.

I've played divinity 2: ego dragonics, dragon commander, os1 n os2 and bg3. My opinion is that they are all pretty good games, but have elements that are to my disliking. For example I really like the combat in os1 but not so much the whole tone of the world they've created. I've got a similar thing going on with bg3 but where my issue with os1's worldbuilding was too whimsical the one in bg3 is too kinky in a unpleasant way, to put it mildly.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ April 20th, 2026, 20:46Most of larian's catalogue is quite good if you haven't played it.

In that sense they create worlds I don't particularly enjoy, but have pretty good gameplay mechanics. So while the game might be fun to play, the world is unenjoyable and the whole thing starts to feel like there is some sort of slopp, that some sort of dissonance is happening. Yeah, the games are good but just don't fit with my tastes most of the time. Tho I do think they are one of the good guys when it comes to game devs.
As for them having their own artistic style - that is true. But it also didn't do BG3 that much good. The thing feels like you are playing OS3 instead of dungeons and dragons, even the story structure is similar to os2.

Got a save right at the beginning of act2, so i'm past all the girlboss **** from act1. I remember I killed the female white haired mage companion from the village, and I think I also butchered everything else up to and after that point so I'm not too worried about any girlbosses.Mortadela_Viva wrote: ↑ April 20th, 2026, 22:31

Crystal Project is one of my all-time favorites. It's the type of game I knew in my heart a Japanese-style RPG could be if the dev poured his soul into the mechanics.methoxetamine wrote: ↑ April 20th, 2026, 18:13Started Crystal Project. Oh yeah this is the stuff, lads
EDIT: He's working on a sequel, by the way. Looks to be the same systems but with various improvements and additions.

I can easily see why, I just got to the capital and am loving it so far, the combat is so good. If it's one of your all-time favorites that must mean the quality maintains which is good to hear. Nice that there's a sequel coming!WhiteShark wrote: ↑ April 20th, 2026, 23:18Crystal Project is one of my all-time favorites. I guess it's fine if all you like is JRPG mechanics, especially in a very gamified (for lack of a better term) way.methoxetamine wrote: ↑ April 21st, 2026, 14:43Careful, you won't like this FANATIC when I get angryrusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ April 21st, 2026, 14:40methoxetamine wrote: ↑ April 20th, 2026, 23:43

Larian has always been better with mechanics than worldbuilding. The world of Larian is basically largely unmemorable, outside of a few lines that stick with you, like the Cheesemonger.Fitz wrote: ↑ April 20th, 2026, 23:00In that sense they create worlds I don't particularly enjoy, but have pretty good gameplay mechanics. This is probably why BG3 was their most successful game: They didn't have to do any of their own worldbuilding, it was done for them and they just had to do their mechanics.
It also has great exploration. It's only really lacking in story.methoxetamine wrote: ↑ April 22nd, 2026, 23:39That IS all I likerusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ April 22nd, 2026, 23:29I guess it's fine if all you like is JRPG mechanics, especially in a very gamified (for lack of a better term) way.methoxetamine wrote: ↑ April 21st, 2026, 14:43

It's also completely lacking in setting with the entire game's setting just being "generic JRPG as written by reddit". There's more thought put into it than it seems, as silly as that may sound, but I agree that the setting wasn't a strong point for me, either.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ April 23rd, 2026, 02:32It's also completely lacking in setting with the entire game's setting just being "generic JRPG as written by reddit". Before I got distracted by recent events in my life, I got really into this open source RTS, Battle for Wesnoth. Been in development for ages, always heard about it but never got around to installing. Well, that changed, and it turns out to be incredibly enjoyable. The difficulty is a bit nuts, at least on first glance, but there's always a way to play a scenario to your favour. My baseline pathway in an RTS, especially a difficult one, is to avoid obvious cheese strategies. If you rely on luck or cheese to balance a story campaign, then the campaign is terribly designed. So far, no issues beyond a few missions, and that was mostly due to scripting hiccups.
I'd like to return and finish the rest of the campaigns. For now, here's some screenshots.
