Exactly. The developers shouldn't be forcing me to do anything! Player agency, remember?rusty_shackleford wrote: β February 17th, 2026, 01:50And then... The developers forced me to use peripherals specifically made for gaming!!!!

If there's an American, Japanese, or World Street Fighter 2 champion that uses a keyboard then I'll indulge this. Until then you guys sound like crybabies. Just buy an old Xbox controller.
Hmm....I wonder why so many games have console-fied UIs now. I just can't put my finger on it....
It's a mobile game port. I don't know why it's in the big budget RPG thread.
Limiting games to those that can be played with a keyboard is lame. Would you really prefer that for a flight sim or Mechwarrior or Wii Sports?Acrux wrote: β February 17th, 2026, 04:00Hmm....I wonder why so many games have console-fied UIs now. I just can't put my finger on it....
Nobody should ever attempt anything like Steel Battalion?

All games can be played with a keyboard. I've never owned any kind of console controller. If you want a controller experience just map keys that are positioned like the buttons, the way emulators do.J1M wrote: β February 17th, 2026, 04:14Limiting games to those that can be played with a keyboard is lame. Yes. I have never played a game with keyboard/mouse and thought "this would really be improved if I had to use a controller instead".J1M wrote: β February 17th, 2026, 04:14Limiting games to those that can be played with a keyboard is lame. So why don't you use xpadder or another piece of software to play everything with a keyboard then?Acrux wrote: β February 17th, 2026, 04:26Yes. Many times I do. I think it's an annoying trend for devs to not support keyboard and mouse out of the box, though.

I'm convinced that a gamepad with a trackball is probably far superior for most games but there's no commercial ones available

There was a time when I had to switch to an ergonomic mouse and controller for most games, because of wrist issues. Too much grinding on a classic daoc freeshard and games like diablo can become a problem, which you dont have with a controller.

for some games, the perfect input devices are mouse&keyboard, for others a controller. For some you might want to consider a racing setup with wheel and whatever your budget allows, there are flight- and arcadesticks, etc.
You can even build your own pinball cabinet with VPinMAME/Visual Pinball etc. or buy pre-built setups, install the software, customize them...
I never understood mouse&keyboard-fundamentalists.
I wish more flight stick games were funded. What that part of the PC games industry really needs is a loss leader to make a device with input standardized and plug-and-play the way that the Xbox controller did.fork wrote: β February 18th, 2026, 16:50The most unique advantage you have with PCs is choice:Acrux wrote: β February 17th, 2026, 02:49Controllers for pc games are gayrusty_shackleford wrote: β February 17th, 2026, 01:50And then... I've documented some reaction for Crimson Desert, mostly from people that actually played the game at summer game fest 2025 (one of them is max dood): the game looks amazing, the demo (technically a save file, not a separate demo per Pearl Abyss rep statement in latest interview) was bad. They had testers limited in what can they can do, no free combat stuff in the main story part shown and boss battle was like a puzzle with gimmicks to deal big damage. If you have, hypothetically, 200 bosses in the game and you show one puzzle boss in a game that has a main alure fun combat stuff, I think it's better to not show it at all. That being said, I'm looking forward to launch, as new game for 2026, while playing my backlog and not giving a care if it flops
(I don't think it will).

Just learned lead writer of new Mass Effect is the writer of Deus ex games and Guardians of Galaxy. They were good enough games. If the companions are not abominations like Andromeda might give it a chance.

Crimson Desert removed, all reports say it's not an RPG even by Witcher 3 standards

'A lot of games' being all games with 3D movement. The only reason it's not popular (edit: among PC enthusiasts) is because devices like Azeron aren't standard.Roguey wrote: β February 18th, 2026, 16:08Analog movement is superior to digital for a lot of games.

The Blood of Dawnwalker is the only game I'm interested in from the current list. MAYBE Exodus too because I loved Mass Effect back in the day, but it looks like it was beaten with the DEI stick.
Duty. Country. Family.
I can't even tell what I'm looking at with this thing. I recently found out that hall effect keyboards are now a thing and they all support analog movement. We just need devs to support them. I would give up my optical keyboard for one if they start getting support.WhiteShark wrote: β March 20th, 2026, 03:01'A lot of games' being all games with 3D movement. Instantly switching directions is more useful than the ability to modify your walk speed in many games and entire genres that utilize 3D movement. Analog WASD is dumb.WhiteShark wrote: β March 20th, 2026, 03:01'A lot of games' being all games with 3D movement. I wasn't arguing for 8-directional movement. 8-directional on an analog stick is obviously worse than WASD, but why would you want to be limited to 8-directional movement in a 3D game in the first place? The major benefit of analog movement is not walk speed but the ability to precisely control your angle and move in any direction relative to the camera perspective.Oyster Sauce wrote: β March 20th, 2026, 04:22Instantly switching directions is more useful than the ability to modify your walk speed in many games and entire genres that utilize 3D movement. It looks fancy but the idea is simple: keypad with a (true) analog stick attached. The form they chose is meant to provide easy access to a lot of buttons in a comfortable way.GhostCow wrote: β March 20th, 2026, 04:15I can't even tell what I'm looking at with this thing. I don't want to partially press buttons in an action game. Modifier keys, such as shift or a trigger button are better. If analog was the answer there wouldn't be sprint buttons in console games. And Nintendo's Gamecube trigger with an extra button click on the end would have become standard instead of something that developers avoided using as intended.

Animation issue. I don't believe there's a difference between tapping a button and just moving the stick in another direction, how responsive that is depends on how many useless animations they decided to attach to it.Oyster Sauce wrote: β March 20th, 2026, 04:22Instantly switching directions is more useful than the ability to modify your walk speed in many games and entire genres that utilize 3D movement. Thumbstick is obviously better for movement, one of the reasons I strongly believe the optimal gaming device for most games is a gamepad with a trackball (thumbstick is terrible for camera control and menu navigation)
