Must follow you around, must be AI controlled, must help you in some way in most of the game's content.
If it's player controlled then it's just a story character idk, I'm excluding them

Pretty misleading to say that the companions can't be player controlled. That rules out most party members in turn based games. So this would be action games where you can only control the protagonist, and the party members are automated only?

Ashley from the original Resident Evil 4.
She has a great AI, warns you about danger, hides behind your back or ducks to avoid getting shot, hides when necessary. And, unlike Ellie from tlou, she doesn't cheat by being invincible or undetectable by enemies - everything about Ashley is fair and square.
One of the best designed escort quests in videogames, people who complain about her need to git gud.

To clarify: I think a companion's behavior needs to speak for itself. If a companion is only its writing, then I do not consider it a video game companion. You are just telling me this character is loyal or cowardly, but they all play the same(however I choose to play them)rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ February 8th, 2026, 06:28Those are just player characters by other meansVal the Moofia Boss wrote: ↑ February 8th, 2026, 06:28Pretty misleading to say that the companions can't be player controlled. What about, say, NPC companions in blobbers, where you can direct them in combat, but they otherwise retain their own initiative and sometimes even equipment, such as in some of the Wizardries?rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ February 8th, 2026, 06:21Must follow you around, must be AI controlled, must help you in some way in most of the game's content.

Trico from The Last Guardian. Your reliable giant dog that you can climb on, ride, have to help out, and he helps you out. The final segment of the game is pretty tense as Trico gets dogpiled by evil mindcontrolled Tricos, and they are ripping him apart before your very eyes and eating his wings, and there is little you can do about it.

Pikachu from Hey You Pikachu. You and your pikachu play around inside your room, and then you go out and explore a park or a forest or a lake, picking up acorns or interacting with the wild Pokemon NPCs. You speak into the mic to communicate with Pikachu. The game did not properly explain the limitations of its system, which often lead to frustration as Pikachu would seemingly not understand you. There was an urban myth for years that the game could only recognize the voice of children. A few years ago someone looked into the code, and it turned out that due to N64's memory limitations, the game did not load all of phrases it could recognize for every level, so phrases that worked in one wouldn't work in another. Also the voice commands work if you just use those short phrases rather than try to make longer, natural sentences.

I liked Hexogen in ATOM and Trudograd. I liked most of the companions from Fallout 2. I liked Skynet in theory, but in practice I wish he'd had a bit more personality. You can hire a hooker to read the dictionary to him in New Reno.
Boone is angsty fun in Jew Vegas. God/Dog and Dean are fun in Dead Money.
He's only with you for the expansion and he needs a bit of babysitting at times, but I liked The Gunslinger in Underrail: Heavy Duty. For as much as he was a vulnerability, he was also a life saver. I'd have been ****** without him because I didn't come prepared enough. He was well put together too with a lot of options for enhancing and controlling him, which proves that Underrail could have supported companions.

A lot of people hated the AI companions in ATOM/Trudograd and those people are wrong. Fallout did it right the first time around. If anything, give them more life and make the player better at issuing them commands.Tweed wrote: ↑ February 8th, 2026, 06:52I liked Hexogen in ATOM and Trudograd. In Mass Effect I liked Grunt, my son, and Garrus, my bro. But that was as a teenager.
I don't recall enjoying any companions as an adult much if at all. I think as a kid I was seeking false companionship, but now I pursue real (IRL) company. The quirky chungus writing just annoys me to no end.
This said, 2V-R8 is a good boy.
