There's nothing funny about it. You're subhuman filth created in mockery of mankind, like your country's games, and this is my gaming opinion. Eat **** and die, along with the rest of your ant hill.

@Poityu, are there enough good C(hinese)RPGs to justify learning how to read it? Would I miss out on a lot of wordplay if I skipped Chinese pronunciation and just read the characters according to the Japanese pronunciation? It's an idea I've been entertaining for a while.

I am inclined to say no but ultimately I'm not qualified to answer this, because:

1. The number of Chinese RPGs I've played can be counted with 1 hand, and none are the famous ones.
2. I am biased against my own culture - I think the only good use of Chinese is looking for piracy :wise:
Japanese comics, animation, drama - many volunteers translate them.
Games - cracks, redistributions.
...Well, maybe another good use is consuming Chinese media, i.e. movies, dramas, games in the 2000s or the DOS era :old:
This is not hyperbole, culturally I've largely withdrawn from the Sinosphere.

If the wordplay is a phonic pun then obviously you will miss it (but I find that the most boring type of wordplay), for others I can't say.

I should probably try to create a comprehensive cataloging of chinese RPGs prior to ~2010 or so :scratch-pipe:

There are very few titles. Only recently do you start seeing some decent ***** rpgs.

Been taking a look at this one, will probably buy. The translation is completely atrocious though, so waiting to see how that turns out.

雍正傳奇 (The Legend of Yongzheng), developed by 遊戲人間公司(Game World — ? Don't see an English name for their studio, translated), 2002
There is a 1999 TV series(?) with the same name that is adapted from the same original works. The person playing the game states that they're quite different in adaptation.

(The auto-translation of the subtitles seems quite good)
Gameplay-focused video:

https://baike.baidu.com/item/雍正傳奇/6052680

Fun oddity: It seems to use roughly the same low-angled camera as Fallout for its art, rather uncommon.

Prince of Qin(2002) and its sequel Seal of Evil(2004). Both have official English translations.

These are Baldur's Gate/Diablo-like games. I need to get around to playing them.

Good video, again, auto-translate the subtitles

@Val the Moofia Boss Not Japanese, but still an Asian example of "murder hobo" game

(Note:I can see him selecting party members using RTS box selection, etc., I'd be hesitant to call this a "Diablo-like" any further than e.g., Icewind Dale was at its release. Probably a relic of the time rather than an actual Diablo clone)

I bought Prince of Qin when you brought it up several months ago, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Gonna look into Seal of Evil too.

It seems one of the older Xuan-Yuan Sword games does have an official English translation

Appears to have been released in 1999(Xuan-Yuan Sword III: Mists Beyond the Mountains), and received an official translation in 2023.

One of the weirder RPGs I've seen in terms of art style or else I would have skipped this, it's an adaptation of a Chinese puppet TV show
霹靂奇俠傳-清香白蓮素還真

Here's the show, I think:

Er, yeah… I dunno. Maybe @Poityu has seen the show!

Pili is the original mainline show that Thunderbolt Fantasy is a something of a spinoff from and have recommended TBF before as a quality watch. I also nominated one of the newer Pili movies for the movie night HQ. It's great stuff.

Pili also did a remake of an earlier season and put it up on Netflix as War of Dragons, though be prepared that it is MUCH slower paced than Thunderbolt, with hour+ long episodes in which very little happens (as opposed to TBF episodes which are 20 minutes and a lot of stuff happens).

Played prince of Qin back when it was an mmo. It was alright, graphics were not too shabby for the time either. Wish there was a remake.

I think there's yet another game based on the same story, but it also released in 1999 and therefore I can't find any info on it due to the popular TV series. I like the art tho.

It would be really cool to find a translation for this one

新剑侠情缘(Legend of Swordsman), 2002
Baldur's Gate-like with companions

[edit]
Appears they released that the same year as another game in the series, the first one being a remake of an older title?

******* insane that western companies can't keep old MMOs like Asheron's Call up, games that had significant cultural impact at the time, yet Asian developers keep their 300 online games per developer up perpetually.
I can easily guess the reason why: Asian studios are owned and staffed by people who actually like the games.
There's 6 separate "Swordsman Online" games, each with separate releases/iterations all available. It's just crazy.
(Swordsman Online is related to Legend of Swordsman I posted earlier)

Yup, looks like Falcom handled the Japanese release. Japanese release credits: https://w.atwiki.jp/falcom_staff/pages/55.html
Chinese Wikipedia page for that one says original was released in 2001 and the Japanese version was released in 2003: https://zh.wikipedia.org/zh-tw/剑侠情缘外传:月影传说
Series page in Chinese doesn't mention any other entry getting a Japanese translation as far as I can tell: https://zh.wikipedia.org/zh-tw/剑侠情缘系列

Alternate theory: Asian players would burn the dev's/publisher's house down if they let the servers die.

This seems to have received a fan remake of the latest game engine, then all three games were ported to it as mods. But… I'm having a lot of trouble and will need a native Chinese netizen.

@Poityu if you have the time, would you be able to untangle this for me? I really have no idea what I'm doing with chinese social media. Here's some posts and the forum(?)
https://tieba.baidu.com/p/7992987103
https://tieba.baidu.com/p/9704967441?pn=1

These two threads seems to be referring to the same thing, I think? One is probably more updated. I found some Baidu download links(I can't find a consistent most updated version or anything?), but I have no idea how to download from baidu.

:scratch-pipe:

[edit]
Actually, think I just need to figure out how to download from baidu at this point. :pipe-hat:

No, I haven't. Thunderbolt Glove Puppetry(霹靂布袋戲) is a specific niche.
It's soundly in the high fantasy category, mixed with Taiwanese folk myths, beliefs.
Naming also favors WoW-like style, I'll just make up some names to demonstrate my impression:
ShadowMourne, BloodBlade, SkyDrake..., has an 8th-grade fever (中二病) feeling to it
Also I have my doubts about the quality of a story running for nearly 40 years non-stop :scratch-pipe:

Basically, not my cup of tea. :P

大唐三藏 (lit. Da Tang Sanzang, name of the monk in Journey to the West?), 2000

I rather enjoyed how the pixel art of these late 90s/early 00s Chinese games looked, it's really a shame this was abandoned for generic weebstyle
Image Image

Seems fine from what I skimmed, but it's Chinese-only.

The MG one has a valid one on the 2nd floor. Its upload date is the latest (2025-11), but that folder is dirty, littered with modding tools and miscellaneous things.
It seems to be a modded 3-in-1 version

I tested, I have a baidu account but the verification code sends to a 163 email which I now have lost access to because I used a fake phone. :rip:

Yet another example and I'm being very picky, these games were knocking it out of the park with their spritework

I can find almost nothing about this game But it looks visually neat!

林海雪原(Tracks in the Snowy Forest), 2006
A bandit suppression combat team marched with difficulty in the snow-covered mountains and forests. Atop another hill, a man in a brown coat stood on the thick snow, gazing out into the distance..
This is an ARPG game that describes the suppression of a gang in the vast snow-capped mountains. The game is based on the theme idea of the novel "Lin Hai Xue Yuan" by the famous writer Qu Bo. It adds a new science fiction color to the original story framework and combines high-tech and modern counter-terrorism story elements.
In the game, you will personally play as the bandit suppression hero Yang Zirong, and return to that unforgettable era to experience that thrilling and magical great adventure journey firsthand.
