What games you deeply regret buying / wish you didn't buy? (Yes, I'm repeating myself - so it is easier to use the search to find this thread, as I tried to find if someone made this - which they probably did, but worded it differently...)

• Expeditions: Rome
  **** woke game. It just isn't pleasant to play either.
• Cult of the Lamb
  I don't know why I hate this game so much. I've played it to completion. I just hate the aesthetics, which are very specific to Devolver Games or so it seems. I feel mocked by the game's visuals. I just hate the game.
• Frostpunk
  I got lured in by child slavery, but I just don't enjoy it. I hate snow maps, so I don't know what I expected. I can't find the fun in it.
• Pathfinder: Wraith of the Righteous
  I loved Kingmaker. I felt scammed buying this. Very woke very ****. I forced myself to finish it just to feel less guilty over the wasted money.
• Surviving Mars
  I couldn't get into the game at all. I just don't get it. I also have a very weird sense like there was wokery around the corner.

I can only think of one purchase that I really regretted. I remember Tron Legacy being really attractive. It was sort of an artbook fantasy movie like Avatar and LotR, but with this unique aesthetic that is almost cyberpunk with the nighttime and glowing lines but without the dirt or the megacorps. It was so cool I wound up buying the Tron Evolution videogame, though that wound up being a cashgrab with a mere 3 or 4 hour long campaign and a laughable multiplayer mode compared to Star Wars Battlefront 2 on the PS2, so I wound up refunding it.

World of Warcraft

I deeply love Warcraft. The artbook fantasy, the music, the elaborate boss fights, several questlines, the RP campaigns, etc. But it turned out to be a humongous black hole of time in my life that set me back. I still check it out when new content patches come out but I don't allow it to become a time abyss anymore.

Last 10years or so only really Cyberpunk. And WoW in like 2004 hated the visuals, UI/casting bars coming from daoc and just gifted that account to someone else only played like 4hours. And Age of Conan at release, game wasnt finish at all after lvl 40 to 60 or so. There were a few others but most I could return since they were offline games. Like Ghost of Tsushima played through that in a week and it didnt even have ng+ or anything to keep you playing after finishing the mainquest.

Most recent would be Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The game is pure slop. It has elements that could have possibly pulled me in and I could maybe suffer through the linear slop if it had a decent story/plot.

Also, the audio is shite on PC.

Indeed. I'm pretty sure that's why I bought it. I don't know if it was a B team or what, but I don't recall its having any of that old Bioware charm.

I figured, alright, let's try it out, surely this rewrite was gonna bring the plot back to something resembling Deus Ex. (It didn't.)

To this day, despite other games I've bought and barely played, I see MD on my steam list and just get irrationally angry that this immense pile of dogshit exists on it.

Played Sky 1 on the PSP way back in the day and I remember liking it. One day years ago finally finished building a powerful PC to run the newest one that was about to come out, I don't remember if it was Cold Steel 4 or which one was it. Bought every single trails game I could find.

Then Val here basically tells me that while he likes the games, the plot has not progressed at all after all this time and that there seems to be a weird "status quo remains untouched" situation going on. I know Val probably would still would recommend the series but, I thought the selling point of the series was the intricate plot that progresses with each entry since the timeframe advances so after the spoilers he disclosed I don't have any amount of desire to go over literal hundreds of hours across a dozen or so games if it turns out "status quo" is practically enforced by the narrative and the writers haven't figure out how to build up to something in all this time.

From what I read online they are gearing up to conclude the series, which is basically the final nail in the coffin for me. I most definitely regret buying into the hype and spending the money to get them all. To be fair, it was a "JRPG" sale on steam, or some other big sale so I got them at a heavy, heavy discount but still, the newer games still cost a pretty penny as their discount was very small in comparison to the older entries.

EDIT: To clarify, I really appreciate that you took the time to explain at lenght the pros and cons as you saw them regarding the series and its plot, @Val the Moofia Boss so thank you for that. My regret is specifically about purchasing the series, even at a discount, after learning that the plot is basically stagnant after a decade and when the creators are basically gearing up to conclude.

I have been putting it off for months but I intend to nominate a Trails game for the adventurer's guild. In spite of the many flaws, I still think they are overall great games and criminally underexposed on this forum. The fun character interactions, ofcourse the townsfolk NPCs being memorable in that they update after every plot event which makes the world feel much more alive and engaging (the HQ really needs to see this), the combat and character building, and the music and aesthetics. I think the only Trails games I have been really iffy on were the Crossbell duology but even then I wouldn't have spent over a hundred hours going through them if I wasn't enjoying it. Only problem is whether or not to recommend Sky which is shorter but doesn't demonstrate the updating NPCs very well because you never stick in any single town for long, or CS1 or Daybreak 1 which do it excellently but are 70+ hour long games at minimum, and I remember people saying that they wanted AG recommendations to be relatively short.

I played Cold Steel 1 on the hardest difficulty that a 1st playthrough allows and I found the combat really engaging and fun. I didn't finish the playthrough because I decided I wanted to get the series and play in release order, hoping to get a good appreciation for the plot.

For what it's worth, @Cipher, I enjoyed Trails in the Sky First Chapter when I played it a decade ago. I think you can probably have fun with the series even if the long term narrative doesn't hold up in the end.
