What's the closest we've ever come to having a Starship Troopers game?
What's the closest we've ever come to having a Starship Troopers game?
Starcraft? Dawn of War? Some other wh40k game? Any shooters? What game comes the closest to simulating the action and tone of that book?

What does that Verhoven movie have to do with Starship Troopers?

Oh, you mean something akin to the books?
Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri from Looking Glass Studios is a power armor sim.
On the more comedic/arcade end of the spectrum there's Earth Defense Force, where you can use power armor to slaughter big bugs.
Some of the movie-based Starship Troopers games do introduce their own take on power armor. Terran Ascendancy does, as does the Starship Troopers: Terran Command RTS.

I don't think there's anything that really embodies the book. Closest is probably this, if you squint really hard

Terran Command straddles a line between the two, I think. Visually it takes a lot of influence from the movie (and is basically a remake of Terran Ascendency), but it doesn't really try to be over-the-top or satirical. There are power armor troops, too, if that's the main issue.
The MechWarrior games, maybe?

Played a bit of Starship Troopers: Extermination. It's an early access and there are plenty of Chinese players in the US servers, so you could say it's bug ridden in 3 ways. I suspect it'll just be another EA scam looking at the player count, but having 16 people wildly retreat to the dropship at the end of a mission with respawns disabled was pretty cool. I would be shooting my way there at first before forgetting my gun entirely and hoping the faster players who got there first would cover me as I just made a mad dash for the ship.
My biggest complaint is probably that it isn't more like the movie. I want to be a grunt with a ****** rifle instead of having access to power armor and an arsenal. Oh well.

"Retro" inspired indie or mobile game port? You decide. Demo's out.
