Do you really own games with GOG?

No RPG elements? It probably goes here!

Do you really own games with GOG?

Post by Bhaalspawn Jr »

I bought Fallout 1 + 2 and a few others from GOG during their Winter sale and tested their offline installers while disconnected from the internet. They install and work perfectly, although I've read online that you still don't own the game i.e. you're buying a license to play them like Steam or Epic.

If GOG went under, would these offline installers continue to work forever?

I really like the idea of just installing games without any BS like apps, overlays, forced updates etc. Takes me back to better times when you just popped a CD into your PC, installed the game and played it.

Of course, that's the whole point of an offline installer. You can back them up as much as you want.

Not sure about ownership, but the software is completely independent from the platform. It's why one of the biggest game piracy websites is just a repository of links to GOG installers.

Even before onine streaming, you were technically buying a license for a cd, dvd, etc.

Only issue is they do nothing to shield from post-release censorship or ****** updates. It's possible to get older installers for some games, but after a few patches, I don't think you can really get the "original" preserved. Some examples have been Ion Fury, Saints Row IV, Fallout 4

Someday you won't, that's how it goes with these ****** leftist companies. Download every game you bought on their ****** launcher before they take it away.

Owning things is gay. I've broken or lost tons of physical games over the years, but no digital ones.

1. people will look at their storage device and think "wow this isn't physical media like a DISK, it's just a stupid DRIVE"
2. you've never owned any games besides the handful of games released under free licenses, ever. You were licensing a copy.

It's probably more important then ever to backup your purchases since CDPR began begging for money lately both with their monthly membership program and with the tip button that's found whenever you make a purchase from the storefront. They seem desperate for cash these days so I wouldn't expect them to stick around another decade especially with so many ******** working on GoG directly.

I know of a few games that got pulled from GOG at the request of their IP holders, but you can still use the existing installers despite that. Heck, you can still download them off of torrent sites.
