Dverghold - Old-school grid-based dungeon crawler with base building

Post by RolandKvltgames »

We are announcing our turn-based Dungeon Crawler Dverghold -a cross between Dungeon Master, the turn-based gameplay of Orcs & Elves and a light base building element a la Darkest Dungeon. We got our Steampage live and the game can be wishlisted.

Image

"When the Dwarves of Dverghold awakened something ancient beneath the isle of Rekestt, King Sterren sent word across the Shattered Sea: brave the haunted depths, or let the darkness rise"

What it is:

  • grid-based movement and combat in the vein of Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, Orcs & Elves
  • Party-based dungeon crawling through dwarven halls overrun by undead
  • Base building and resource gathering between expeditions into the dungeon
  • For fans of the genre: we'll have a dungeon synth soundtrack by DS artist Splendorius
  • Guaranteed free of any diversity, wokeness or related bs

Coming to Steam for Early Access some point Q1 2026. We're trying to get a demo for Steam Next Fest (February).

Steam page is up if you want to take a look or wishlist:

You return to your hub screen (kinda like the Hamlet in Darkest Dungeon), where you can enchant weapons, buy provisions, train and recruit party members and talk to NPCs wo may give you quests. Buildings can be upgraded with the resources you bring back as loot from the dungeon or you can find veins where you can mine them (Gold, Iron Ore ...).

Here's an early view of the hub screen:

Looks pretty cool in all honesty. Don't know it it's actually good or even complete, but it looks good at first glance. This is how games should strive to look (minor nitpick, Atari/8-bit squares for blood effects - not a fan) and if well designed/programed/tested, be made. Glad to see small companies trying (and maybe suceeding?) to release good games. Hope it's not a bait and switch and you meet a surly niggress in level 2 or something equally woke.

Are these linear upgrades, or is it more involved?

At the moment, we will have linear upgrades for the Early Access version. We would like to make it more complex over the course of development though.

Admins, can we get this moved to GRPG? I know I for one don't regularly check the Foundry, I might have missed this if I wasn't already aware @RolandKvltgames had joined the forum.

We currently started work on the main menu. Here's a a first line-art sketch for it. Guess I'll just post regular dev updates here now :)

We would put this on different layers and animate and move parts of it, have a ripple shader on the water etc.

Noted, we may have to remove romance from the game now though to put the time into making sure the rock is sufficiently cool.

That's actually not a bad idea, maybe even a couple marking the path to the cave.

I'm the main artist by the way.

I love that you used runes correctly but the little decoration inside the O looks like an ingwaz so you should fix that.

There are only characters in Dverghold that would also be in classic European mythology or let's say in a work by Tolkien (I am not talking about "modern adaptions"). So that means there will be no people who look black in that game. Or Indian. Or any other race that wouldn't fit that kind of setting.

EDIT: Also no gay stuff.

It was originally a mobile game that got then ported to Nintendo DS. It was made by ID Software and was a sort of successor to the Doom RPG that Carmack made. @Neocrius , our lead artist, liked to play it a lot and we took inspiration from the way it handles turnbased gameplay (monsters only move when you move)

I've only seen the one adventure screenshot, are there another three characters on the other side, or is it a three character party?

And does the player select from premade characters, or is there a customization option?

The underlying concept, of course, is wonderful.
