RPGs where you adventure with family members

Post by rusty_shackleford »

These seem to be rather rare.

In Dragon Age 2, you are joined by either your brother or your sister.
Throughout BG1 & 2 I guess you technically adventure with multiple siblings at one point or another :scratch-pipe:
I think this can be more difficult to pull off with including parents due to how RPG mechanics tend to work.
Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Wanted to say Mass Effect Andromeda since the main characters are brother and sister, but then did a google search and found out that your sibling is not a party member. You pick one as a playable character, and then the other just does nothing. What a waste.

Not only that, but your sibling spends most of the game unconscious

Banner Saga 1 has a father and his daughter in one caravan group. The father is one of the protagonists though the story can switch between different caravan groups.
Adventuring with family members is quite rare indeed. It either requires creating some additional characters for the player or having a fixed protagonist with some pre-established background and family members. I guess the second case is rare because it constraints possibilities for role-playing and may be harder to do right compared to the single protagonist.

Another odd case is Fallout 4, there's a mod that adds your wife as a companion and reuses a ton of her already recorded dialogue.

Sir Brante has a large family focus (if you want it to). I don't know that I'd call it adventurous though.

Fountain of Dreams - You can recruit your kid brother, he's mostly useless through.

The Necromancer's Tale - Your negroidic half-brother joins you for a few skirmishes later on.

Glorious Companions - In the lizard campaign your sister joins you as your first recruit.

I thought it was decent, though it had its flaws, mostly in the combat and some woke elements.

Dragon Quest V. You get a wife and have two kids who are all playable party members.

Primal Planet. Haven't played this one, but you're a caveman who has to protect his family from dinos and aliens.

It's probably a lot more common in older JRPGs. Final Fantasy 2-6 had party members that were siblings. 5 also has a grandfather and granddaughter join the team, but they're never in it at the same time. Everybody's moved on to the found family idea now, because real families are icky and problematic.

Edit: 6 has a granddaughter, father, and grandfather in the roster as well.

There was an rpg i saw that was based on some comic or something that revolves around a family, seemed like fits the bill exactly.

For the life of me can't remember what it was called though ******. I do remember they had a guest dlc in pathfinder kingmaker where you helped 2 of the family members return to their dimension but looking at the steam store page don't see it listed.

Golden Sun 2 is about the children of the heroes from Golden Sun 1. I don't know what happens after the first hour because there was too much JRPG writing for me to suffer through.

Dragon Quest 2 has the hero set off on an adventure with his cousins, all descendants of a legendary hero and carrying on his legacy against this era's Dark Lord.

I was starting to list some Fire Emblem games that came to mind, but soon realized that virtually the entire franchise has family units. Some even allow units to pair together and sire offspring that, through whatever rapid-aging plot device, join your ranks with a mix of their parents' stats and skills.

Eugenics is very cool, actually.

Lost Odyssey: you play as the thousand year old immortal Kain and your descendants join as party members.

Trails in the Sky: you play as the adopted brother sister duo of Estelle and Joshua who then fall in love with each other.

Trails in the Sky the 3rd is about another adoptive brother sister duo pair turned lovers.

Trails into Reverie and Trails Through Daybreak 2 one of the routes is about yet another adoptive brother sister duo pair turned lovers.

Utawarerumono: your future brother-in-law is one of the first people to join the party.

Fire Emblem Fates: the entire game is predicated on which family you will join or stick with: your birth family of the Hoshido royals who you were separated from birth and have never known, or your adopted family of Nohr royals who are invading Hoshido. Whichever one you join becomes the core characters you are with for the rest of the game and the other become the main antagonist group.

Aselia the Spirit of Eternity Sword and Fire Emblem Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates: you marry a party member before the end of the game. In the two FE games you can even have children (who become party members too) before the end of the game.

Fire Emblem 4 Genelogy of the Holy War: the game begins with your sister and your brother in law coming to help you and they become your first party members.

Fallout 2 has shotgun wedding. Does it count? Or do you want biological relatives?

If it does,
- Nerevarine-Almalexia spit should technically count (but I think you can't "adventure" with her? I've never played Tribunal).
- Sengoku Rance - you can fight together with your harem.

If only biologicals do:
- Deus Ex fits, though you can't exactly "adventure" with your brother.

You can get married in King's Bounty: The Legend, your wife provides various benefits depending on who they are and you can even have kids. Your children take up artifact slots and provide random benefits...this is mostly bad though because you can't remove them for more useful items, so don't have sex.

You can get married to a succubus, a frog, or a zombie...what? Why are you looking at me like that?

I dunno, does Crusader Kings qualify as an RPG?
