How would you save Halo? Personally I would have the next game ignore literally everything after Halo 3. It opens with Master Chief coming out of cryo sleep and chuckling while telling Cortana he had a crazy dream she turned evil etc etc and then they would both laugh while she uses the suit to jerk him off and then they have a new adventure.
Just make mass effect except master chief instead of Shepard
I'd play this. Also open to "X other game but stars Shepard" variants.

That's what the Halo show is.
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

what version of gaylo should I play? the remaster?
Play the one on the MCC with the original visuals. The remaster sucks and ruins the aesthetics and vibes the original devs were going for.

Just pirate the original pc release, the visuals are more soulful and the game will feel good to play either way.

I think it's once again up to fans to decompile the original Xbox version and make their own ports to modern platforms. Even the MCC version still isn't 1:1.

regenerating shields are really boring, health packs/shield packs are more interesting, if they want to keep it less gamey just find a way to integrate that into the world idk

They didn't bother changing the hitboxes for the new terrain so you'll be having a fight in a ship with completely different architecture and keep shooting the old walls constantly.

What do you think of it compared to the FPSs that were out at that time?

Most of the shooters out around that time were focused either on story/corridor concepts or were simple death match style with the bulk of their focus being on weapon type/damage with various temp power ups within play.

While I wasn't a Halo fan, I think they were trying to bring more game play concepts with shielding and the like which as I said, most FPS games weren't focusing on.

MCC has a ton of mods available for the first game, those might spice it up for you. I remember the Chaos mod being great because it ups the AI count a ton and gives the game more of an RTS scale as a result, and there are two custom campaign levels called Mercury Rising that are also stellar.

They messed up lighting in the MCC. Halo 1 looked really bad in that. I'd play the original Halo CE.

I played and beat Dark Forces 1 & 2 earlier this year which were significantly more enjoyable.

I rarely ever play FPS games so there's your unbiased opinion, Halo kinda sucks. It's just gears of war for slightly older millennials. Shields are a boring mechanic, all you do is run between arena to arena and repeat the same "gameplay loop", you never do anything new or interesting.

It has a decent story I guess but they didn't foresee me just using yewtoob

That makes sense, they were more "controlled" in style and direction. They contained a solid story, and were built around a more focused mission style with the abilities of the character centered around a specific style of play.

When Halo came out, it was trying to focus more on a hybrid of story mission style, but attended a lot to the UT style of game play of multiplayer so its features were less developed than that of those more specific style games.

Overall, I would say it did ok for trying to focus on so many concepts, but it also didn't live up to the key areas of each it tried to attend to leaving it lacking overall when individually assessed.

Single player FPS games like you mention were far better formulated, and multiplayer was still better in games like Unreal Tournament and the like (though Halo had vehicles which was pretty big). It was a solid attempt, but Halo has and will always be a console title in my eyes, which is why it "may" not directly, but indirectly be the signal to what was to come in terms of the demise of traditional PC FPS games.

To be fair, FPS multiplayer play was pretty generic and consistent early on, but... that was the "draw" for people, the "multiplayer" aspect of it, just getting into a room and killing each other over and over. In the early days, it was a big thing with LAN parties and the like. We made our own maps for Doom, Duke, Quake, etc... and played them over and over for the "community" aspect of it. Same thing for RTS games of that era (Warcraft I/II, Total Annihilation (making custom units was a gas)).

Console players were late to the game in terms of networking/multiplayer games and so they took over and obviously consoles drove the market eventually, so I guess Millennials tended to think they were experiencing some type of new concept of play that had existed a decade before them. /shrug
