Leaving aside the usual Nintendo & soulslikes fetishism, what's the rationale behind ranking Halo above Doom? Not only was Doom more impactful and innovative but it's also more fun to play today. Why are journos so infatuated with a mediocre game with Halo? there has to be more than "it was the first playable console FPS" (which isn't true) and "it was the first time an FPS got multiplayer right" (which isn't true).
Portal has to be one of the most overrated normie games of all time.Segata Sanshiro wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2023, 12:50The top 10:

Obvious reason why all these Top 10 50 100 charts are dumb. They're nearly always a product of their time, and the people that make them are always biased towards including newer releases and their own experiences (and the fact there's far too many games for one person to play them all), despite many older games either leaving a bigger impact on the industry, creating a new genre by being released, or simply by being the better game.
There's nothing egregiously wrong with the top 10 picks, they're all solid games, though everyone is likely to disagree with one or more of the selected games.

Portal is a flawless game brought down by an annoying fan base.

I liked Elden Ring more than the others, but it isn't top 10. Probably 80-60 range, though. I think it could have been better if it was just a dungeon the size of Limgrave and the Well. Maybe that's because I quit after them.CrazedGoblin wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2023, 18:00Elden Ring is overrated.Segata Sanshiro wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2023, 12:50The top 10:

Weirdest cracker you know.
Halo was mid all the way. It was nothing special unless you were a console cretin that hadn't seen a good FPS yet.
You may as well not bother replying to my posts if it's to argue anything except concrete facts or your personal opinion. I still probably won't see it.

It's a list.
I betcha whoever made it thought they were really edgy for putting BOtW above Dark Souls.
Meh. I can think of other games that made more of an impact than Halo, for example. Whatever...

If it's meant to be a list of most influential games, Skyrim takes #1 easily no question. You could argue the games that inspired Skyrim belong there, but they aren't the ones that directly influenced most of video games made post-2011.
Nearly every single game now has RPG mechanics. Did any other genre ever infect the video game industry quite like this?

[CoD4 sold] around seven million copies by January 2008 and almost sixteen million by November 2013.
I doubt CoD4 is influencing, say, Assassin's Creed.Skyrim has sold more than 60 million copies

That's an interesting topic of discussion though. Games, by their nature, are iterative, and imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. As an example, Call of Duty popularized ADS, which now appears in nearly every FPS.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2023, 21:09Nearly every single game now has RPG mechanics. I think the reason modern developers shove RPG mechanics into everything has less to do with the fact they think they're neat, and more with the fact the behavioral psychologists the company has on payroll have figured out that watching arbitrary numbers go up, accompanied by catchy music and sound effects, gets the dopamine flowing.

fc3 is the closest thing to a non-beth skyrim clone we've seenmaidenhaver wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2023, 22:58Far Cry 3 would rank with Skyrim as most influencial. Didn't every game do FC3 discover the world by climbing towers?
