Can relationships in this game be safely disabled or do they do something stupid like give characters +50% damage?

It gives a chance for Chain Atrack to trigger if both characters are next to each other, from what I remember. It might also give a chance for extra MP regeneration on turn start.

You can disable it without any issues. The config file for this game is pretty robust.

I think I'll play it again from the start now that the dlc is out, it'll be nice to have more to do in the endgame.
