I do think this game would benefit from having a party. It would make sense from both the in-game and meta perspective. As is, you're sent on dangerous missions alone against mobs of human enemies and packs of animals. Gameplay-wise, this turns into the player doing a couple of actions per turn and then waiting for 3-5 enemies to do their ****.
I think the new Shadowrun games were better at this, even though they were about as complex as a free mobile game.

I own the base game but neither of the DLCs. HD's description didn't really capture me, but Expedition sounded intriguing. Also, I agree that a companion system would be nice, but it is what it is. Certainly can't be worse than Raven's Cry. Ha.
Been looking at some build guides. They seem to be targeted at people who have already finished Underrail.
I was hoping to find a recommended build for using anomaly XP for a first-time playthrough. I'm assuming that I'll need some kind of lockpicking/hacking ability to find a lot of those things, some combat ability, and an overall strategy that doesn't rely on knowing where to buy/collect everything to build perfect equipment.
Thoughts?

The character builder is still helpful, even if you're new. It'll let you map out how many points you'll have and what feats you'll get. Normal difficulty provides wiggle room so long as you don't make the mistake of spreading yourself too thin. I played Oddity the first time around without any clue because the game was brand new. Lockpicking and hacking are both very helpful and I'd take them as a first time. If you intend to craft you MUST have 7 int for the crafting feats. Otherwise, the stat might not be important for what you're doing. You need high perception for any ranged weapon. Don't bother investing in dodge and evasion if you intend to wear heavy armor.J1M wrote: ↑ October 3rd, 2025, 16:15Been looking at some build guides. The real key here is specialization, decide what you're doing and pump those skills up, do not spread them around or you'll get crushed (again, the character building will give you an idea of how many points you have to spend on various skills).

The glass cannon build is both effective and fun though. Stealth also works well in this game, as it allows you to hit and run for dealing with enemy hordes.Acrux wrote: ↑ October 1st, 2025, 04:44My problem with UnderRail is that you can have effective builds, or you can have fun builds. But not both.
Some of these items can indeed be found behind locked doors or containers but there's also a limit on the amount of experience you can get from an item stack. I'm already finding items over the limit so perhaps it's not that big of a deal. Locked containers have nice loot though so these skills are still worth picking.J1M wrote: ↑ October 3rd, 2025, 16:15I'm assuming that I'll need some kind of lockpicking/hacking ability to find a lot of those things,
For those of you who haven't found it yet, you can speed up the movement by pressing the + key. Makes exploration less of a chore.

We didn't have maps either! The game took place in non-euclidean space and couldn't even be mapped properly!CornCake wrote: ↑ October 3rd, 2025, 20:23rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ October 3rd, 2025, 20:00harumph, back in my day we had to use cheat engineCornCake wrote: ↑ October 3rd, 2025, 19:37For those of you who haven't found it yet, you can speed up the movement by pressing the + key. Because of the global map, some areas had to be added and some had to be reorganized (especially around the starting cave areas) in order to achieve geographical consistency

I got lost in the DC for about eight hours the first time around. Didn't help that certain factions were big mad at me and I had to go back and forth for some puzzles.
Are the rathounds simply supposed to disappear after they die? They should be dropping some loot right?
They drop loot but not always. Kill some more!nullSector wrote: ↑ October 4th, 2025, 08:27Are the rathounds simply supposed to disappear after they die? They should be dropping some loot right?

I think you need to buy an Extract Humour blueprint from Quinton on Level 8 Agronomy and Pens of the South Gate Station. This will let rats drop organs (hearts, adrenal glands, etc.). Some rats also drop leather, but I don't know if it's tied to a blueprint.nullSector wrote: ↑ October 4th, 2025, 08:27Are the rathounds simply supposed to disappear after they die? Also, loot drops are not guaranteed, so some rats might drop a leather and an organ, some rats just leather, and some rats drop nothing at all.
Also, also, rats respawn. Don't know at what intervals. Might be the same as the merchant stock - 90 real time minutes. So you can farm rats for XP (probably quick diminishing returns) and drops.

And, since this game is such a ****, you can start a new game, loot every container you find in the SGS, Export Character, start a new game using the Import Character feature to keep all the loot you find. Rinse and repeat until you can't move because you're overencumbered.

I don't think blueprints are necessary as they dropped before I had learned them.logincrash wrote: ↑ October 4th, 2025, 08:49I think you need to buy an Extract Humour blueprint from Quinton on Level 8 Agronomy and Pens of the South Gate Station. Finally they dropped something, guess i just had bad luck for the first few rats, I feel it would be more intuitive if they dropped an empty corpse (like most games do) rather than straight up disappearing.
if you're using the simpleton xp mode, you're gay

I tried to follow an Assault Rifle Tank class guide without spoilers but, while it had some really good general advice for a noob like me, I found the gameplay to be too boring and frustrating.
I restarted the game with a different character (Stealth Snoipah) and it's been much more fun. One-shotting enemies from shadows with my .44 pistol and then running away to hide again is very entertaining.

I found some riot gear with a ballistic shield, so I've been going Judge Dredd on rathounds.logincrash wrote: ↑ October 4th, 2025, 16:29I tried to follow an Assault Rifle Tank class guide without spoilers but, while it had some really good general advice for a noob like me, I found the gameplay to be too boring and frustrating.

Got a crossblade and a couple of armor pieces, not sure if they are helping yet.

Okay, this game rocks.
Got ambushed by a Lurker Cut-Throat and got killed by 3 knife attacks. Had to reload. Armed with pre-cognition, I snuck up around him, threw a molotov in his general direction and then threw a net over him. Watching that son of a ***** scream "AAARGHHH I'M ON FIRE!" while he couldn't do anything to get out before blowing his head off with a sniper rifle was ******* awesome.

Which is the entire point of this. The having to learn where you are going, the problems if you don't, etc... An entire concept of play removed... cuz "I don't wanna!"Tweed wrote: ↑ October 3rd, 2025, 20:28I got lost in the DC for about eight hours the first time around. Sorry, I was ****** when Styg put that in.
I didn't realize enemies respawn after a while. I ran to base naked to sell some crap and ran into a bunch of rathounds.

reverse highlight allows you to interact with stuff that's obstructed by other interactable stuff (e.g. when the enemy is hiding behind a door, sometimes clicking on him may cause your character to try to close the door instead of attacking).logincrash wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2025, 09:14What is the meaningful difference between these two buttons?

Just finished the Heavy Duty content. Make sure you save before you attempt it or you might be up **** creek. Stuff is really difficult, but there's phat lewt all over the place. Loads of top level crafting parts, guns, ammo, and some special goodies too.
