Iβm debating on if I should a steam deck or used PC because I would only be playing old games on it.

If you need it to be portable, buy new laptop with 4060 and 17 inch display, much better solution for old games.Unhelpful Contrarian wrote: β November 16th, 2024, 07:30J1M wrote: β November 15th, 2024, 21:39If you want to play PC games on a budget, the solution is to buy a used PC. Unless you don't have space for a desktop at home, a laptop is a dumber buy than a steam deck.Faceless_Sentinel wrote: β November 16th, 2024, 07:38If you need it to be portable, buy new laptop with 4060 and 17 inch display, much better solution for old games.Unhelpful Contrarian wrote: β November 16th, 2024, 07:30J1M wrote: β November 15th, 2024, 21:39If you want to play PC games on a budget, the solution is to buy a used PC. A steam deck is for portable emulation. It is not a replacement for a PC. If you don't have space for a PC at home, then you get a laptop. If you get a laptop, I still recommend the steam deck for travel, but those are both luxuries, and a laptop will be enough until you get more room or the steam deck 2 comes out.Unhelpful Contrarian wrote: β November 16th, 2024, 07:30J1M wrote: β November 15th, 2024, 21:39If you want to play PC games on a budget, the solution is to buy a used PC. Zothique leaving was kinda sad. He was very earnest and maybe slightly autistic in a way that he couldn't pick up on banter. He was probably a sensitive young man, a la Tweed. I probably should've replied to him a bit more before going with the acrid "You're a ***" jokes.
"Oh, it all makes sense now, brother."
The steam deck for $320 is enticing, but I think I'll wait for the 2 to price drop.
Steam Deck was one of my best purchases

I used mine as a master emulator machine. I had like 1,500 roms/isos on it and connected to my TV. Glorious
I only use mine on vacation and I usually only play emulated SNES or similar or simple indie games. I fell for the "I need the biggest SSD and another 256 GB SD Card" meme when it really wasn't worth it. It's good for a system to play low-size and low-demand games (to preserve your battery to play longer), so don't worry about the SSD size. You should be playing the 80 GB games on a desktop anyway for better graphics.

I primarily use mine to play on the TV by streaming my games (modded, of course) from my PC. It's super smooth, practically no latency

PSA: There is a very solid Linux gaming distro that supports most handheld PCs and turns them essentially into Steam Decks, which allows for a broader range of purchase options (both lower and higher range), since non-Valve devices are normally crippled by Windows being a terrible OS for handhelds.

How easy is this? I have loads of old games on roms that I'd love to play on the deck when I get it.GhostShiroyama wrote: β October 2nd, 2025, 13:06I used mine as a master emulator machine. I had like 1,500 roms/isos on it and connected to my TV. Glorious![]()

Emudeck has a really good walkthrough. There's also a file share app on Steam deck desktop mode you can use to wirelessly transfer your games over from your computer.Breathe wrote: β October 2nd, 2025, 14:59How easy is this?
