Or would that be too close to grave robbing/looting the dead?

If that was really a valuable comrade and friend, then I reckon he would've wanted his gear to continue being of use to the party. But I guess it also depends if he would've wanted his stuff to go back his family like Rusty says.

My players loot their friend's corpse to the bone then give it to the next stranger they meet who coincidentally wants to join their party.

If you aren't making cute accessories out of your friend's bones, are you even really a friend?

Depends on the setting.

In a realistic medieval world, nobody but a very rich king would dream of letting a suit of chainmail or plate get buried with the wearer - that **** is worth a fortune. It would be like burying your dad with his fancy new car.

In a high fantasy setting, who the **** knows. Maybe +3 magic swords can be bought by the dozen at the small town shop, so taking your dead buddy's weapon would feel like taking his nice shoes.

If you don't bury their magic items with them, what graves are future adventurers going to rob?

Sell their equipment to pay for raising them at the local temple.

One for all, all for one. If he didn't want us to loot his stuff when he died, he shouldn't have signed on.
