Increasing transparency in moderator edits

Post by rusty_shackleford »

You may or may not know that we store every edit. This is why @orinEsque's posts take up hundreds of gigabytes in the database.
Originally, everyone had access to their own post history. This was removed because it caused an issue with privacy: sometimes we redact personal details that have already been quoted, and have to edit quotes too. Posters could then still see the redacted material by looking at this history.

Short of seeing a reason not to make this change, I'll likely be returning this after I inform the staff members of how to purge these post history snapshots that contain the sensitive information.

I'd have to go back and find all the times we redacted privacy-related things and remove those edits from post history
I don't think there is any good record of this

Is there no way to just delete or sequester past logs, so you can start with a new 'user visible' log moving forward?

This is probably the best way to go about it, I do regular backups so I'll just tag a snapshot prior to doing it. I'll think on it for a bit, but I foresee no real reason this would cause issue.
