Tomb Kings are kind of the good guys though

I suppose I should clarify. They are undead because of Nagash, and they're mostly just angry about it.

mostly consider em neutral cause the only thing that motivates them to do anything with their forces is to reclaim their stolen treasures n shiet, it's not like you'll ever see them coming to the aid of other Order factions.

Empire and Kislev getting curbstomped by a Chaos Host? We sleep.

Some random Norscan pillaged our tombs and took the loot across the sea all the way to the other side of the world? AW HELL NAH

Hmmmm. I misread the question as favorite Warhammer Fantasy fiction, and the only WHF I've read is Dan Abnett's Malus Darkblade trilogy. Whoops!

Tilea?

A minor faction, I know, but among major factions is the Empire of Sigmar. Sure, Bretonnia has stronger cavalry, and Dwarfs have stronger artillery and infantry. Elves have stronger magic. Vampires are superior in sheer number and magic. Chaos is a numbing threat. But guess what? The empire excels in combined arms. Is a bunch of barbarians unified under Sigmar's rule that tries to grasp everything—magic, gunpowder, faith, steel, everything—to improve their odds of survival while being surrounded on all sides. Needless to say, they have a lot of cool units.

Eg :

I'm more of a 40k player, not too familiar with Warhammer Fantasy. My favourite 40k factions are Space Marines (Blood Angels) and Chaos (World Eaters), so from what I see here, I'm thinking the Empire, Bretonnia (Space Marines), Vampire Counts (Blood Angels), and Warriors of Chaos (World Eaters).

Lizardmen look sick though.
I hate them.

If I had 4 votes I'd pick Empire, High Elves, Dark Elves and Tomb Kangz

They are vastly different. The Empire is vastly different than the Imperium. Sigmar contrary to the big E suceeded in his quest. He did defeated Chaos and Nagash. HE also did ascended into divinity. Humans are also much less intolerant towards "xenos" for eg, Marienburg has an entire elf quarters and the Empire highest nobility, the Elector Counts has its iconic weapons, the Runefang forged by the Dwarfs himself. Elves also are those who established the way to have "sanctioned psykers" in Fantasy aka colleges of magic. Bretonnia is vastly different. Is a land all about chivalry. They refuse to use firearms. They army consists in cavalry and meatwaves. Their artillery is restricted to trebuchet. They are quite zealot and worship an "lady of the lake".

Vampire counts is a very different history. They are and arne't part of the Empire so to speak.

The Vampire Counts/AoS Ossiarch Bonereapers have the most amount of unique and cool looking models IMO. I like the big thick boney mecha appearance overlaid with reflective blue armor plates, tattered capes billowing in the wind, and ghostly, smokey azure skulls inside. Runnerup would be the Chaos Warriors for that Death Knight look with the cool helmets, huge pauldrons, big weapons, edgy magic, etc.

changed it so you can edit your poll decision

also was tempted to make it so you could pick multiple; if i had to pick top 3 it'd be:
Warriors of Chaos
Greenskins
Skaven

love the goofy aspects of green boyz and rat boyz, and the whole 'tide' **** goin on (greentide, vermintide)

That said i like most of the other factions as well, only ones i'm kind of indifferent to here are Lizardmen and Tomb Kangz, so it'd be kind of hard to pick a top 5 or 10

Had to vote Empire as first pick, but there's a bunch of factions i like, so much so even a top 5 will be tough as rankings fluctuate depending on mood and criteria.

This isn't like 40k where i genuinely loathe the tau and dislike demiurg/votann or hate primaris and therefore sm, or how eldar are the worst now, nah, in fantasy it's all just simpler and i only start getting an aneurysm and becoming ****** if someone mentions the end times.

Historie of ye Moste Illustriouse Wood Elfyn folk:
The wood elves massacre human villages for fun every year as a hobby (lol)
The wood elves have to team up with the humans to beat up some beastmen
The wood elves form an alliance with the humans (yuck)
The wood elves keep slaughtering humans for fun anyway (lol)
The wood elves slaughter entire high elf cities because they fell for an obvious frameup
The wood elves realize they were fooled (oopsie, no hard feelings right)
The wood elves start using dark magic (we can handle it, unlike every other person who has ever tried)
The corrupted wood elves slaughter humans, other humans, dwarfs, and high elves for fun
An ancient and irreplacable Elder of Athel Loren sacrifices his life to forcibly purge the corruption from the wood elves
The wood elves actually feel a tiny bit guilty for the first time in their entire existence (redemption achieved! yay!)

They really are the ******* worst.

As for the best, I guess Empire, dorfs, and maybe some versions of Kislev. CA also did a surprisingly tolerable job with the Cathay lore, kind of.

Honestly a bit of a toss-up for me, as I like the Empire, Bretonnia, DORFs, and the High Elves. Picked Empire here though as they’re a bit of everything I like about the rest of ‘em.

Bretonnia look like the main character on the table. I've never played WFB, just HeroQuest, but I've watched a lot of games and that's how it looks to me. Since they're the main Good Guy, they're my favorite.

Feels like the OP is missing some options.

Where are the Tau equivalents that everyone hates?

No faction is like Tau in fantasy. The closest would be lizardman.
Guided by higher ideals (the Old Ones’ Great Plan not Greater Good).
Multispecies empire (Slann, Saurus, Skinks, Kroxigors, etc. like Tau caste system).
“For the Plan” has a collectivist vibe.

But are still VASTLY different. I honestly prefer fantasy because, No Tau. more memorable characters like Gelt, more human variation, instead of just one empire, there are a lot of variation in human cultures, the zealot militarist Empire, the Frenchman more arrogant than Elves and more Stubborn than dwarves, the Tileans with more backstabing than Tzeentch cults, the extremely burocratic Cathay while ruled by dragons and half dragons. And scales matter more. For eg, having Nuln under siege is a major event in fantasy. Meanwhile in 40k, having entire solar systems destroyed is another thuesday.

I meant a faction that everyone hates because when you lose you don't get to use your units and when you win you still feel bad because you lost half of your **** before you started being able to fight back.

Dwarfs. They were the very first time I got introduced to warhammer. I still have their codex, the 2nd printing one, it were the 200X when I bought it.

Each unit description consisted in a story of a grumpy old Dwarf warrior told in a tavern in front of a group of youngsters, all of them stories with a healthy dose of hatred against any greenskin or elf. And utter contempt and disdain at every piece of technology more advanced than a crossbow, lamenting how the Dwarf race decayed from when they were able to forge runes capable of cleaving a mountain in two, and the new generations started resorting to "newfangled" arquebuses and organ cannons.

That book had great charm.

VC have a really good aesthetic. Very 1500's Germany, with a dash of Italian excess.

High Elves are obviously the best and straightest faction, Empire second best.
