After spending years scraping the bottom of the barrel on Steam, I have to say that there are very, very few — near zero — games that sell significantly less copies than they should be selling. If anything, there are way too many games that sell far too many copies relative to their quality.
Actually a bit surprising at how well the market does here. Any indie dev who thinks their problem is marketing is probably wrong

Hasn't been my experience at all. I'm often coming across games with 100-200 reviews that are really good. Every once in a while I'll find something with <20 reviews that is pretty enjoyable. I think Counter Attack: Uprising is one of the best shmups but almost nobody played it, likely because the art was lacking. Then you even have games like Devil Blade Reboot and Crimzon Clover that are very well rounded and better in all aspects than many classics from AAA devs and they still don't sell all that much. Meanwhile, there is plenty of absolute garbage slop with 50k and 100k reviews selling millions. The fact is, today's "modern audience" has ****** taste and many games sell very poorly even if the quality is absolutely elite. When I come across a game with 73 reviews, 98% positive, and I personally enjoy the game a lot, I tend to think it deserved to sell a lot more than it did.

I can’t imagine using discord casually . I only force to used it because some artists that I commissioned primarily use it for communications.

Visible damage indicators are mad gay

They are a necessity for these old MMOs that have been converted into pseudo action games. They were not built from the ground up as action games so this is what has to be done. With FF14 especially, the game has severe netcode issues which cripples the combat design. For real action games, yes there should be no unimmersive hud indicators like that.

Nah, they are no longer a necessity. Developers just don't bother to move on from them. They think their MMO must have them because all other MMOs have them. It is like how every MMO has a cluttered UI; developers think this is how MMOs are supposed to be.

With RTS there are still satisfying spins that are not Starcraft clones, like Supreme Commander's huge grandiose scale, or Mount & Blade which places you down in the thick of the action and where the action is simulated more realistically and you don't have anywhere near as much ridiculous RTS-isms. For FPS I do not agree that Doom/Quake/Halo are the end all be all. More realistic sims like ARMA and Red Orchestra have their place, and so do fantasy shooters like Destiny or Overwatch. I liked Donkey Kong Country 3 but would not consider it to be the end all be all platformer. There are other good puzzle games besides Tetris. And so on.

It's not so much that the best has already been made and it is not possible to beat it, but rather that game design is time consuming and difficult, but time is money and money is in short supply nowadays, so a lot of games are not able to get developed to as good of a point as ye old games. There are also a lot of issues with both the current Western and Eastern games industries.

I also think that forums like these that are populated mainly by grognards have a tendency to overglorify the past and to offhandedly dismiss new games as unworthy or as lesser.

The only way this is true is if society collapses to the point that making video games at all becomes impossible. Gaming didn't decline naturally, it was sabotaged. Get rid of the dystopia and gaming will flourish again.
