I don't think KCD2 was as successful as they claim.
For one thing, they didn't say anything about 2 million sales since the announcement of selling a million copies during the launch period. Nobody is even talking about the game anymore, not even the developers.
There's also very strong evidence that the game's stats on Steam were heavily doctored by using Chinese bots, the keys to which were likely sold at a steep, steep discount.
Finally, the recent-ish release of the first DLC failed to move the playcount in any significant way, meaning that very few people actually bought it. And much like with the base game, there were no announcements that I saw of the success of the DLC.
We can safely assume that Warhorse played their trump card, but that their ploy failed, and now both their, and Varva's, reputations are forever tainted.
That's lowballing it - the project so far is rumored to have cost over two billion dollars, and that's just the development costs, sans the marketing.
Rockstar delaying the game over and over again is a good indicator of their mounting panic. They never gave a flying **** about the polish of their products before, the launch of multiple GTA titles and the sorry state of their online components are proof enough of that, so the only reason they'd delay the game this much is either because it's an utterly broken and buggy piece of ****, or because they're doing major rewrites to the plot.
Also, and maybe this is my own bias, but I noticed a shift in the marketing away from the ugly **** *****, with more emphasis now going towards the male protagonist.
They need this thing to be the single most successful entertainment product in the history of the human race, and they also need it to entice people away from GTA: Online. And let's not forget that the game will be exclusive for the PS5 for a period of time, and the PS5 isn't doing all that well right now, with flatlining numbers of consoles sold.
