Not a very good launch!
I like that they can't even be bothered to update their website
Registration to Project Epoch is not currently enabled until closer to our release date on the 26/07/2025.

PE continues to be a very funny disaster. Servers and registrations are still down. Janitors censor negativity in the Discord milliseconds after it appears even though thousands of people are messaging in the one unlocked channel (the entire thing was locked after the failed launch, they just opened one room the other night).

It's remarkable how they didn't plan for more than 2,000 players. That's really not a lot. Bigger servers like Warmane regularly pass 7,000+ active players at any one time.

They will realistically have to wipe the server and relaunch when they can host 10,000 active players.

It's fun to watch though.

I've heard they're not going to wipe, just cap players at level 15 and 30G for now. There are 60000 people in their Discord server, I have no idea what they were expecting.

As promised, we’d like to share a more detailed technical update regarding the current state of the server and the steps we’re actively taking to improve it.

Team Expansion / Restructure
We’ve mentioned the Launch Council we’ve assembled to help us. We have about 12 folks from across the modding community with different skillsets and talents assisting the core Epoch team. We’ve split into two different groups to focus on different options for expanding server stability.

One group is our optimization team focused on performance improvements.

The other group is our multirealm team focused on our exploration of other options to support large player count.

Optimization Team
We knew Project Epoch was going to be popular based on the increasing number of players joining our Discord and creating accounts, but we were blown away by over 30,000 instantaneous live connections at launch. Our main goal is simply ensuring server stability for the massive number of players online and in queues.
In the span of 36 hours, members of our team have successfully completed migrating both the core and the database infrastructure to Linux Debian. The reason we didn’t do this earlier is simple: our core just didn’t work properly on Linux, and we wrongly assumed our Windows Server configuration would scale for player demand. The launch has proven otherwise.

As a result, we are rebuilding key tools on the fly to run in a Linux environment. This type of adaptation has never been done before, but we have the right people in place to support us.

Our Linux conversion is still experimental, but with the switch to Debian, we’ll be able to use important tools essential for maintaining stability and performance such as Memory Sanitizer and Thread Sanitizer without needing the core to be built in debug mode. There is a lot of modding community knowledge on performance optimizations on Linux and we are engaged with developers who are experts in this topic. This is a major leap forward.

The Windows Server configuration is not the only challenge we’re facing. We’ve already identified one major issue related to the database, and we’re in the process of fixing it. However, we’re still facing memory-related issues, which require deeper analysis that simply wasn’t realistic until we had access to these tools.

Our long-term goal is for each realm to comfortably support 5000 to 7000 concurrent players. We know this won’t happen overnight, but that’s the bar we’re aiming for.
Multirealm Team
Since our team is so big now, we can’t all work on optimizations at the same time. For this reason, we’ve created a second task group to rapidly develop an experimental backup solution that would allow us to split our current realms into sub-realms as a temporary measure in case optimizations are not sufficient to meet our concurrent player goal in a reasonable timeframe.

This would involve introducing secondary versions of existing realms: Kezan and Kezan 2, Gurubashi and Gurubashi 2. These realm pairs would share character and guild name pools and would function as tied realms. This is intended as a strictly temporary solution. Once player counts stabilize, the realms would be merged back together. Further details about how this will work as far as character copies and how this works from a player perspective will be provided if we decide to go this route over the next days.

It is possible that despite our efforts we hit a hard scalability roadblock (meaning we’re no longer able to raise the online cap). If we continue to see significant login queues, we aren’t ruling out opening a third realm. If we choose this option, this team would handle spinning up the new realm.

In Conclusion…

As we mentioned in our previous update, we’re actively working with experienced developers from across the WoW modding scene to help push all of this forward. Every hour brings progress, and we’re confident that these steps will lead to a stable and scalable future for the server. We do not have a specific timeline of when the server will be available, but we will bring it online periodically for testing. We will continue to update you on our progress at least once every day and more frequently if we have information to share.

Thank you for your continued patience and support. We look forward to welcoming you to Project Epoch soon.

I do not find having to memorize and practice pressing 20 different damage buttons that each only chip 0.5% of the target's HP bar for several minutes straight to be fun.

The buttons are consequential. I can press Celestial Conduit and literally melt everything on my screen. I can press Invoke Xuen and get a 30% haste buff and start doing massive AoE damage. I can press Strike of the Windlord, do massive damage, then follow up with a lightning-fast Fists of Fury. I can press Slicing Winds and leap forward 40 yards while doing over a million damage to anyone in my path.

Now we could argue about all the "filler" abilities that you'd use in-between those buttons, but even those have purpose and impact, just not in the same way as the ones I described above.

Honestly, I feel that auto-attacks should be the only filler present. If a player is actively pressing a button, it should be/feel impactful to the situation. A weak-sounding, low-damaging ability on a quick/spammable cooldown, whose primary function is to simply build stacks for ANOTHER skill, feels pointless to me. I'd prefer to manage the "spender" skill through its own cooldown and general resource cost (mana/energy/rage).

Ideally, I'd just want a handful of impactful damaging skills and a pool of situational utility skills (movement, buff, debuff, off/def CDs, and healing) that make sense and are flavored to my class choice.

The first part is probably true, but in my experience it was the least moderated WoW server I've seen.

It really is both sad and hilarious how much even a tiny amount of power goes to people's heads... and how quickly they are to stomp their feet in a childish protest the moment anyone dares committing the sin of not sharing in their delusions.

Regarding PE, they're still pushing discord updates that their team is hard at work behind the scenes. Who knows what that means for readiness and stability though.

It's funny, people always glaze them when they post "we're hard at work", while the server remains offline. There is no evidence that they're doing anything.

Until we have proof they are doing anything, there's no reason to even care.

The Midnight expansion heroic and epic editions preorder description has been datamined. The higher editions give you exclusive housing decor. So now we houses on the cash shop right from the get go.

Pretty surprising that all of the subscription MMOs will now have cash shop housing items - but Genshin does not. None of the housing decor there can be bought with money, all of it has to be crafted.

So Project Eflop is officially dead, and will never launch.

Sort of a shame, but actually given the devs, and their jannies are all furry far-left freaks, probably a good thing.

In other news, Turtle will be launching a new server on 17 August.

Project Epoch announced, last night on Discord, that Ascension WoW will now handle their servers while the PE team will remain in creative control of the game and the cash shop. There are some additional softball questions they ask themselves and answer, but the most pertinent ones to non-backers appear to be: there will be a launcher change (to Asc WoW's), accounts will be migrated/merged, the new servers are already set up, and there will be at least one public test before a potential launch.

I know very little about Ascension WoW. In the Private WoW scene, I've played a bit of Turtle, some Solocraft, and a decent bit of Single Player Project (SPP). That said, my interest in PE was always less "I need to play this now!" and more "Oh, that's new. I guess I'll try it".

Ascension is incredibly monetized and P2W and anyone who believes they aren't going to turn out PE for a profit is a sucker. Hardly matters since half the team has left over the past week anyway. I'd advise against anyone getting invested into it unless you're ok with that.

When I played on Ascension years ago, I found the team to be very unprofessional. They kept rebooting the servers every 15 to 45 minutes, and this persisted every day for weeks. Even when no new major patch had dropped. Never seen any other MMO private server do that.

Basically it was a rugpull, and donations have been siphoned into their own pockets with a big Ascension payout to go with it.

Server may be worth looking at as a seasonal realm, but not something to spend a significant amount of time playing.
