Why does an 8k texture take longer to make than a 4k texture?

Don't they realize they don't need to do any of this?
AAA studios absolutely need to do all of that, the indies don't, which is why indie games tend to end up the more interesting product.

Normies won't consoom because graphics bad and no multiplayer. Let's not forget that bad games are made because people keep buying them.

This is one of the funnier lies since all of these new releases are rendering those "8k" textures at 720p and upscaling to 4k.

Marvel Avengers about to be delisted: https://www.pcgamer.com/marvels-avenger ... d-forever/
"The servers are staying live and you'll still be able to download it if you own it, it just won't be a thing you can buy."

Take your guess as to why:
  • Deep shame
  • Pay-as-you-go Marvel licensing contract
  • Lost the rights to a single song and don't know how to remove it
  • Running the servers actually costs more than $4 per sale
  • Can't figure out how to remove the multiplayer part to sell as a single player game
Bonus quote:
"Note that if you do want to play Marvel's Avengers for the story, don't click on the "play" button when you launch the main menu for the first time. That'll take you to a post-campaign endless mode via a cutscene that spoils the entire plot. Instead, you want to click on the "operations" button and cycle back to the first campaign, which is called Reassemble."

They don't need to increase visual fidelity to sell games to normies. They could instead focus on making accessible games with interesting mechanics, which would appeal to normies more than adequately. Their obsession with graphics is motivated more by things other than a belief that graphics need to be good for games to sell well.

Holy shite, 70k+ triangles on a sandwich. In ten years or so, this will easily surpass the number of atoms comprising your average real life sandwich. AAA+ Vidja will be exclusively the realm of gubmint-managed quantum supercomputers, a single streamertard will play, everyone else will just watch and comment about the CTDs and ****** performance like we discuss corrupt and mismanaged sports today...

I think Todd just gave me an epiphany or at least caused my brain to briefly tune into a possible future reality. Intense af.

"The absence of limitation is the death of creativity", so they say. There was a time when developers didn't like CDs because they had no idea what to do with all the added space, now a single sandwich takes up more polygons than entire games did during the PS1/N64 era. Not only that, but they expected customers to buy overpriced hardware to make up for their own shortcomings.

Let's hope Todd and his team cleans house when it comes to Elder Scrolls VI.

You're not around normies very much, are you.

Yeah, if they're ******* stupid they're gonna put effort into making good games, because bad games with shiny graphics sell like crack anyway. The numbers don't lie and they spell disaster for anyone with good taste.

I hate repeating myself but let me be clear like Obama: the gaming industry isn't this:

Image

...where gamedevs just haven't been told yet by us enlightened and sexually attractive HaQmasters that all they need to do is make good games. They make bad games, because they sell. And as long as they keep selling absolutely ******* nothing is going to change.

What sells entirely depends on who is in the market for your ****** games, and if the market's filled with ****** brown people games, then you're getting more ****** brown people. Stop making **** games for *******, and you'll get better buyers who buy better games.

People who buy nu-call of duty games skew away from the average gamer, and yes, they do like the shiny eye-candy. If that's the game you're making then you can't compromise.
Nearly every other segment of the market has no such pressure placed on them.

Those people ARE the average gamer. I hope you didn't think that the average gamer likes complex crpgs like Wrathfinder or autism satisfiers like Factorio. Your favorite game in the whole wide world, Baldur's Cringe 3 sold so well precisely because of the simplified ruleset of 5e and the shiny graphics.

Segments of the market we're not talking about because this thread is about ******** on the AAA industry.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... game-flops
Video-game developer Striking Distance Studios is appointing new management several months after the commercial flop of its first game. CEO Glen Schofield is leaving, a Krafton representative confirmed Wednesday, saying he has “decided to pursue new opportunities.” Striking Distance’s chief operating officer and chief financial officer are also leaving. Krafton said all three departures were voluntary.

Schofield founded the studio in 2019 to make a spiritual successor to Dead Space, the sci-fi horror series he co-created while working at Electronic Arts Inc. In December 2022, the company released The Callisto Protocol to mediocre reviews. In January, analysts said the horror game was on track to sell 2 million copies, missing Krafton’s target of 5 million. In recent months, Striking Distance laid off more than 30 staffers. The company’s website now shows around 90 employees.
the guy somehow spent $160M on this game.
