What's the consensus on this? Is it as good as Wizardry 8, or close?

It's just a massive slog. It follows Tittymaster Bradley's design philosopgy of wiz6 and 7 of making the game an endurance test filled with killer GM ********. And I like wiz6 and 7 to a degree, character building and combat are actually somewhat fun if incredibly frustrating. In this one though, combat is just boring, enemies are boring or blatantly overpowered for the lulz, dungeons are boring, travelling is boring and the only cool thing is that you can play as an elephant.

Just boring. Completely unexciting and lacking any depth. There's several technical shortcomings as well, with certain enemies being fiddly to click on or their animations being unbearably long. There's these man eating plant sort of enemies that can 2 shot your entire party from miles away with hitscan poison breath or something, with no visual feedback as to how long their range is or when the attack starts. They'll blow out your eardrums because they damage all of your party at once so you can enjoy going deaf by the sounds of UGH and AUGHH times 6.

It's bugged all to **** as well.

It sucks because I really wanted to like it, but it just isn't well-made.

Bought it when it was new, my computer couldn't run it properly. Tried to get into it a few times since then, but it didn't take. I need to try again though.

Too bad that the game sucks. It looks cozy. I've grown to like the late 90s/early 2000s 3D graphics but there doesn't seem to be many games that combine the mechanical depth of older RPGs with newer graphics well other than the well-known ones.

Also, Jeff Ludwig made some mods for it: Clicky

Of course, I can't vouch for their quality.

THe main thing I remember is Equus maximus, the uber horse, that can carry a full party up a mountainside.
