After many many years of thinking "oh that sounds interesting I should probably try that out" I've finally taken the plunged and started playing Nehrim. I'd like to give Enderal a try afterwards as well assuming I'm not totally burnt out on TES by then.

So far my impressions of Nehrim are mixed but leaning pretty heavily on the positive side.

The biggest oddity with it is just how much is changed but how much is also the same.
The game could do a much better job of explaining it's mechanics especially ones that relate to how stuff was done in Oblivion. Biggest example is the changes to how leveling is handled.
On first glance once I saw I had an EXP bar and was earning it from killing enemies/quests/discovering I assumed that the use-based leveling of Oblivion was stripped out and replaced but that's not quite true.
The majority of your leveling WILL come from EXP which then turns into "Learning Points" to spend at trainers you do still gain skill ups from using your abilities just at an even more glacial pace compared to Oblivion. This means that the attribute bonus problem from Oblivion is still very much present and in fact a little worse.

Now it's easy to level up just from killing enemies out in the woods/quests but it's basically impossible to get manual skill ups in time to be min-maxxing your attributes unless you really want to go full gookslop mindless stat grind. The over all issue itself isn't as bad since Nehrim does away with level scaled content so it's not like you have to deal with wolves turning into ogres and trolls bashing in your pitiful +1 point of endurance per level squish mage but it does still mean you can sort of lag behind in areas that in theory are suited to your level.

Another example is how important fatigue is to spell casting. In Oblivion your spell effectiveness is reduced by wearing armor. It still is in Nehrim but it doesn't matter as much and it's not NEARLY as important as fatigue now is to spell casting. At zero fatigue your spells are about 1/4 as effective. This was not explained and I had to go reading the wiki to learn this.

Besides these I am finding the world quite charming. Everything seems well made with lots of really pretty scenery in the open world and well designed dungeons that don't feel like just going through yet another Oblivion template dungeon. The quest design is a bit of a mix of normal Oblivion quests with markers and some that give you directions without a GPS tracking beacon on where the exact location is. The voice acting is all in German and while that obviously takes a little getting use to the voice acting sounds pretty good especially for what is a 15 year old Oblivion mod. There is a recent mod using community voice actors and AI to voice the whole thing in English but I don't know. Listening to it the voices are a mix of AI dispassionate monotone and awful amateur voice actors doing "I'm VOICE ACTING!" voice. Think of every amateur anime dub and that's pretty much the vibe I got. I'll stick with the Deutsch and force @Finarfin to translate the random signs around the world thank you :bounce:

So far the story is very "meh" I have to say. The reasoning for the plot starting is a little silly and the player character has an established backstory with a side plot to find more about their past which is a little odd. Gives me a very bad feeling it's going to be something very stupid that retroactively makes the plot feel dumber once it's revealed and make any attempt at roleplay hard but I'll have to finished the questline to give any sort of definitive opinion on it.

Another thing I'm not really liking is the faction you're pretty much forced into as the "good guys" are very libtarded.

From what I can remember the world was pretty nice and the exploration. Dont expect too much from the quests tho. The main writer was very young still when they made it.

Nehrim's leveling system was better than vanilla Oblivion, but there never was a standalone overhaul using it. Its how TES leveling should work.

So far the exploration is really great and rewarding. Every dungeon I've popped into has had some sort of unique boss enemy with useful unique loot. There are some special items like flowers that give you direct bonuses like carryweight or books that give you learning points as well. None of the locations feel poorly put together either like a lot of these early Oblivion era mods frequently are. I'm sure there are some rough bits somewhere in a mod of this size but I've yet to run into them.

I don't hate the quests so far. The writing has a little bit of cringe but it is charming in it's own way. It's better than the sort of irony poisoned ******* dogshit you see now. It feels like it's coming from a genuine if a bit immature place which I can handle. No one has marvel quipped at me yet.

It definitely still has some things about it that could use major improvement. I'm not a fan of keeping the attribute bonus system from Oblivion for example. Especially now that not only is health per level tied to endurance and magicka per level tied to intelligence but now your intelligence decides what "rank" of magical spells you're allowed to learn on top of already needing the right skill level to be allowed to cast them in the first place.

iirc there was quite a bit of turnover on the team between Nehrim and Enderal. I liked the latter despite some wokeness. But the main quest was completely mogged by some of the better side quests and characters.

The writing as said before is pretty typical edgy fanfiction style stuff that you would expect (two characters in particularly came eerily close to direct quoting Revenge of the Sith) which is okay. One issue though is how much dialog there is of two characters talking to each other while the player is stuck in place unable to do anything. It kind of drags on a bit, the fact the audio is in German means that I speed read what's being said while just having to sit through the spoken audio I can't understand, and most important this is Oblivion so it is frequently at risk of crashing and making me star the entire process all over again!

The veeeeeery long section to meet the dwarves is a pretty good example of modder's meglomania sadly. The sections are extremely huge and technically impressive but it was genuinely about 3+ hours of pure dungeon delving with no breaks. I think had it been chopped up a little bit with breather sections I would have liked it more as it really did start to drag on. Especially when the outcome basically results in a 30 second conversation before you're told to leave anyway.

No I'm still slowly but surely going through Nehrim. I am getting slightly fatigued and these weird forced stealth sections that don't use Oblivion's stealth mechanics but weird vague scripting aren't making it easier.

Aside from it all being quite hilarious (minus the game crashing, that is quite unfortunate :? ) the screenshot of your companion looks quite nice, not sure what it is exactly. His smile looks more "felt" and genuine, in a way, than what I recall Oblivion NPCs usually having. Maybe it is due to the mix of the colors and shading, but he gives me a very good impression :heart:

Finally finished the main quest after taking a month long Resident Evil sabbatical. The final act goes at an insane break neck speed where it feels like the game is just desperately trying to wrap things up. You go from blowing up a statue to start a low level revolt in a city to suddenly finding another magical god slayings sword and killing 4/6 of them in a boss rush.
Then there's a sudden reveal that the guy who has been leading the war against the gods is actually half god and he suddenly chimps out and gets killed leading to the player getting the other magic god killing sword and deciding to become the shadow god.

You're then teleported AGAIN to another location where you talk to the last god who gives up because of predestination/fate. After that you learn you have to kill the concept of fate/destiny itself now because the world is imbalanced after the death of the gods so you go burn a book of prophecy in the heart of the world (which you just now find out exists btw) and then fight some ***** who is an envoy of fate which somehows results in predestination being destroyed forever and mankind is finally free to fulfill it's own goals without being controlled by fate. This all happens in the span of like 90 minutes after a 50 hour playthrough.

There's a series of epilogue quests about being a shadow god which I will probably check out but I'm pretty underwhelmed overall. Especially because your companion through the whole game gets ******* killed off screen and now you don't have your only follower to take along with you if you want to explore the rest of the map now. Feel like if I"m going to be some ultimate super duper shadow god I should be allowed to bring my boytoy back to life.

That the death is off screen was truly unexpected to me. The sudden mythical god slaying of prophecy and sudden rush to the end I could live with, which reminds me of the likes of Farenheit and Detroit Become Human, but that a companion that seems, to me at least, be an integral part of the journey, a true companion to keep by your side, is gone and done and never seen again off screen is quite strange if not jarring I would even say. Is the body seen at the least, or is it just a line of dialogue or similar that tells you about what happened and he is just deleted from the game? Is there a buildup to it?
