I never got fishing until I played Far Cry 5's fishing mini-game. I don't have much to compare it too, but I finally got the appeal of catching fish.
Fishing in Terraria is very comfy, in a "listen to a podcast and relax" kinda way. Although it's ****-easy, literally 1 button press, so it's not even a proper mini-game.

Finally, a game with a plausible fishing technique.

I don't get this fixation games have with this ridiculous "pole" based fishing technique. I've never caught a fish that way. I know of no actual fishermen who fish this way. This method is a forced meme that absolutely nobody trying to actually catch fish uses.

@krokodil

made a post praising this game on Codex and got **** on for it years ago. I bought it on his recommendation and it's good fun, very relaxing but also engaging (learning new locations, setting up custom lures, customizing your boat). Unfortunately I yoinked myself back into various flavors of online multiplayer right after starting it (I started playing as part of the Jenkem x Kalarion Redemption Arc).

Good game.

You mentioned both of these in a previous post

This one has the "black womn scientist" meme.

This one looks nice

Not even a scientist, she's a shipwright, lol.
And the other shipwright is a female ***** or whatever.
And then there's a female scientist.

Complete shitshow.

There's also the below game, that seems to be a copy of the farming horror game, only focusing on fishing, apparently coming out soon:

Seconding "Dave The Diver," "Dredge," and "Intergalactic Fishing."

Fishing IRL is also fun.

I prefer fishing minigames when they are optional rather than story mandatory to progress.

That said I have yet to try out a game that's entirely about fishing, so the recommendations in this thread are all great.

fishing minigames
I've never played a game that I thought was made better because it had a fishing minigame. Breath of Fire and Link's Awakening are to blame.

I really like the idea of fishing in games but it never really seems like something I would want to exclusively do in a game and the way it's implemented in the games that I do like and feature fishing usually aren't very enjoyable. I've been playing ESO the past few months and there have been a few monthly/weekly challenges that require fishing (and I have a companion who gains affinity for fishing) and it's rather dry. I don't like it when the entire "mini game" is just pressing a button, waiting for an animation, and then pressing a button again.
That being said I don't really know what you could really do to make fishing on it's own enjoyable. I haven't fished much at all myself but to me it seems like the primary joy of it would be everything that surrounds it. Either the peace/quiet or enjoying a time out with friends, getting to go out in nature, ride a boat, do something that doesn't require a lot of physical strain etc.
That's why I think it would work best as like a mini-game in something like Oblivion/Skyrim (I've not actually tried the fishing mods for either but I know they exist) which have charming worlds that you wouldn't mind just sort of vibing in. I just don't know how you would make fishing have intrinsic value in and of itself though.
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

This seems like something I would like in theory but due to the way Rockstar games work would probably just drive me to madness because it'll have 45 minutes of unskippable minutiae that I have to do exactly the way they want me to when they want me to in order to progress the story. A story that I will need to progress to unlock basic gameplay features.

Get yourself a save that is 100% Story complete and then just ride around hunting animals, fishing, selling stuff. The story missions suck but the rest when you are free to do what you want is amazing.

From experience, I can tell you that the core problem is that fishing is not fun.

It certainly isn't if you're doing that lame meme fishing. Add electricity or explosives and it becomes a lot more entertaining.

If it's the cut scene I think it is, it's100% optional and most probably skipped it. It was very memorable.

I would get really annoyed at fishing with two people who won't shut up.

Outside of MMO fishing which doesn't count, only fishing games I ever played was the one I had on SNES; Super Black Bass, and some other one that was on PS1 I'm pretty sure that I don't recall. I like when it rains in games especially for fishing. Zangarmarsh is a favorite for fishing because of the gloomy rain and drizzle.

I thought that Warframe's spear fishing in the open world zone on Earth was neat. You could see fish in the water and could hop along the rocks following them and then aim trying to predict their path and throw the spear and it would physically hit (or miss). Much more satisfying than your usual bait and line fishing which is usually presented as a separate minigame from regular character control in the world.
