I don't think it's a spoiler or much of a hint to say this, (edit: I guess I will put it in spoiler tags anyway in case)Mr.Wonderful wrote: ↑ September 4th, 2023, 14:277 hours playing Riven throughout several days. I never had problems with Myst even as a kid, replayed it in 2016, I think, and once again had a blast. But this fuckin Riven game... Read journal three times, listening to soundtrack, thinking about it even at work, dreaming dreams about it and I still have no clue what to do there. I'm at point zero, just aimlessly clicking stuff. I have no clue if things are connected or not. My brain and Riven are not on the same page.

Couldn't imagine doing the fire marble puzzle without a guide. It's something I'd consider using as a torture device.

This is one of those puzzles where I seemed to be in the zone and managed to figure out the logic pretty quickly. However what stumped me for about a day wasrusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ September 5th, 2023, 03:13Couldn't imagine doing the fire marble puzzle without a guide. Playing BG2 now and man... I was right in the past, the first ~3 hours are really awful, the whole setup for the story is a joke. Constant forced dialogue and interruptions, the game overtly tries to hold your hand and tells you where to go and which quest to do. This no longer feels like your story, you gotta chase down the most pathetic excuse of a vilain that people like for some weird reason. No longer the game keeps up the illusion of the player forging their own path you gotta jump in wild carousel ride. It's fitting that first place you get to explore is a circus. I will endure in this playthrough till the end this time, iirc it had still had some good side content.
Finished Terminator Resistance. Fun shooter, though personally frustrating at times, and a far worthier sequel than any of the movies they made past the second. Also gave the Infiltrator mode one spin (on easy mode of course; I still almost died in one spot) and that was also pretty good. I'll wait for a sale to check out Annihilation Line.
After tiring of the same old genres, I've decided to get back into more strategic/builder titles for the time being. More specifically Theme Hosptial (through CorsixTH) and Project Highrise. Both games are appealing in their own way, but Theme Hospital is one of the more cozy games I've played in a while. A good sense of humor, and relatively easy to learn. It's enjoyable juggling the numerous responsibilities you are given as hospital manager, and the lack of any real building mechanics like SimCity means there is more structure and guidance to the game than in other titles. This works for me moreso than a blank, empty sandbox, as I never know where to start and can get overwhelmed. The personality also shines through and gives the game a lot more character than if it was some generic, faux realism affair.
Project Highrise does this exact thing, but rather than a hospital you are trying to run a successful, globohomo tower complex. Running it as efficiently as possible. The music is soft, sound effects quiet, it's a relaxing time so long as you can get a feel for it.

I was playing Ogre Battle, but the autism defeated me. I just didn't care enough to keep jumping through all those goofy hoops.
I've been on a card game kick so I'm playing Library of Ruina. I didn't really know what to expect. It's much more dice-rolling and much less deckbuilding than I expected, but that's not to say it's devoid of tactics. The art during the dialogue scenes is very pretty but I don't like the chibi visuals in combat. Things haven't gotten very challenging yet but I'm still early, and I have actually lost a fight already, so I don't think the difficulty will be a pushover. The Japanese translation is a little spotty but not terrible. The dialogue is all voiced but only in Korean. My main fear is that it will become repetitive since it seems to have a strict loop of battle -> loot -> equip better gear/cards -> repeat.
I'm playing Fallout 1 to see if it's as bad as I remember. 73 rats later... yeah. How can anybody like this tedium?

Yeah in this post-BG3 world Fallout 1 really shows it's age. I mean how can we call it an RPG when you can't even have sex with the rats?
It's been so long since I've played this game that I remember nothing. I'm not relying on metaknowledge to skip all the boring **** and bypass filler enemies to go straight to the good loot.Roguey wrote: ↑ September 16th, 2023, 10:36You don't have to kill all the rats in the first cave or even go to the second vault at all.Emphyrio wrote: ↑ September 15th, 2023, 23:27I'm playing Fallout 1 to see if it's as bad as I remember. 73 rats later... yeah. In the starting cave you can scroll down to the exit. You don't need to go to the side areas that have nothing but rats that you can see yourself.Emphyrio wrote: ↑ September 16th, 2023, 22:21It's been so long since I've played this game that I remember nothing. It's also obvious that the water chip is not in the first vault that Shady Sands can mark on your map. Safely skippable.
I didn't ask for a walkthrough.Roguey wrote: ↑ September 16th, 2023, 23:21In the starting cave you can scroll down to the exit. You just need to actually think about what you're doing and whether you want to do it instead of mindlessly consuming content because it's there.
Yeah, I already stopped consuming Fallout 1 after I looked in the kill log and saw 73 rats.Roguey wrote: ↑ September 17th, 2023, 00:36You just need to actually think about what you're doing and whether you want to do it instead of mindlessly consuming content because it's there.
Without metaknowledge there's no way to know that the rats aren't guarding something valuable, or that vault 15 doesn't gate main quest progress for that matter. It's pointless to tell me that those areas are skippable after I've already cleared them, and I didn't ask. If I wanted to skip the game because it's boring, I'll use my metaknowledge to load up fallout 2 and walk straight to the enclave base and win in ten minutes.
I enjoy crushing rats with all my might. To build a world that is rodent free... there's no higher goal than that. The last man will climb the tallest mountain and observe the horizon with pride, knowing full well his mission has been accomplished.Emphyrio wrote: ↑ September 15th, 2023, 23:27I'm playing Fallout 1 to see if it's as bad as I remember. 73 rats later... yeah. You think rats in an RPG would be guarding something valuable???? Like I said, you don't need metaknowledge, you just need to be approaching things thoughtfully.Emphyrio wrote: ↑ September 17th, 2023, 01:20Yeah, I already stopped consuming Fallout 1 after I looked in the kill log and saw 73 rats.Roguey wrote: ↑ September 17th, 2023, 00:36You just need to actually think about what you're doing and whether you want to do it instead of mindlessly consuming content because it's there.

You're irrtating me dude. Stop replying to me just to say ******** ****.
You're refusing to meet an old game in its own terms. Most importantly, it's a roleplaying game that provides a certain player freedom. You know what I do when a certain aspect of an RPG bothers me? I avoid doing it unless necessary. I've learned to enjoy games more when I'm not obsessed with killing every critter that appears on screen, trying to maximize EXP, sometimes it's ok to say "no, I'm not gonna explore every path, it's ok if I miss an item, and if I miss an essential item, I'll deal with the consequences later". In a roleplaying game, I'll play the game according to the role I'm executing, as well as trying to maximize enjoyment from it. If I approach the game as a checklist simulator, I'm not roleplaying anymore, I'm just doing homework. You killing 73 rats in the beginning parts of the game is your fault and blaming the game for it is ********.
I accept your concession
rpg designers in the 90's really unironically thought that fighting giant rats and bugs was riveting gameplay. All these excuses you guys keep making for it are cope.
Ah so now it's not just Fallout 1 but RPGs of the 90s as a whole.Emphyrio wrote: ↑ September 17th, 2023, 02:04rpg designers in the 90's really unironically thought that fighting giant rats and bugs was riveting gameplay. All these excuses you guys keep making for it are cope.
Yes, many had fun with those games and your screeching can't take that away. Now go enjoy your favorite Detroit simulator.
"All games from before I was conscious are bad!". This is not the 'own' you think it is, on the other hand, it reflects badly on you. Not being able to relate to older media will always expose a limited capacity and lower sensibility. **** context n shiet, just give me comfort media I'm accustomed to, rite?

fallout was a game about blowing people up and seeing gory deaths, everything else is history rewriting by 50 year old devs who were barely out of highschool at the time they made it

An abandoned vault that was largely picked clean by people who willingly left said vault is no longer secure. No they wouldn't have and didn't leave behind anything truly valuable.Emphyrio wrote: ↑ September 17th, 2023, 01:45Vault: a secure room in a bank in which valuables are storedRoguey wrote: ↑ September 17th, 2023, 01:35You think rats in an RPG would be guarding something valuable????
