The Alters: A gay sci-fi game for gay *******

Post by DDC »

I'm pretty sure none of you were wondering about the new base management game "The Alters," but I'm going to tell you about it anyways. My interest in this game had always hovered somewhere at less than zero due to the gay as **** marketing art with everyone making faggoty facial expressions:

However, I heard the base management was fun, the graphics/setting looked good, and it was free on gamepass, so I gave it a shot fully expecting to get ****** off at something and uninstall it within an hour or two. To my surprise, the opening was very strong in terms of story setup and presentation (the vibe didn't match the art at all), and the game loop of exploring a hostile planet while managing your base seemed pretty fun, so I decided to stick with it. I just completed it so you don't have to, and here are all the reasons it probably isn't worth your time:
  • -The story starts off intriguing and suspenseful (crew killed, must get base running to avoid death by massive solar flare), but that steadily fades the more you play. Unfortunately they weren't able to come up with any interesting twists, and you never discover anything interesting about the mysteries of the planet you are on.

-The game is way too easy, to the point that it hurts the story. I played on the harder of the two difficulties, and simply put, the time and resource constraints are so loose that they kill the suspense of the story because you get to a point in each act where you have nothing to do but sit around and wait on the scientist character to do plot-specific research or just wait while resources are mined. The game is quite fun when you are exploring the planet (a new zone in each act) and setting up your infrastructure, but once you do that it just dies and becomes extremely tedious until the next act. There are people on the Steam forums claiming that they can't figure the game out and are getting stuck in failstates, which has only further damaged my faith in humanity.

-The game goes quite a while without dropping any overt wokeness, to the point that I thought it would be recommendable. Then out of nowhere, one of your clones (the main character has an ex-wife and is presented as straight) walks up to you and starts blabbing about his gay lover. Your character expresses surprise, because he believes he is straight, until your gay clone (who has your memories up to a certain point in life) reminds you about "fooling around with the high school basketball team captain"...which your character initially claims was "for laughs," and then he reflects a bit and realizes he was actually really a massive ****** all along.
Overall, I did enjoy The Alters in parts, but I can't recommend it for the reasons above. If they cut the gay **** out, made the areas twice as big, upped the difficulty, and worked on the plot a bit, it could have been an excellent game. Incidentally, these are mostly the same complaints I had about Frostpunk 2 from the same devs, which was a major decline from Frostpunk 1.

Thanks. I watched Scarlet Seeker's video of it a bit back and he had almost the same exact conclusion, so I skipped over it.

I appreciate that this is an effort post but I have to let you know that including that image so early is at the heavy detriment to reader retention because I feel like I got all the information I could ever need from that.

This is extremely dark when you think about the psychology of why this was added and considered relatable to whatever ****** wrote it and what the reality of these sort of situations actually are.

Artists really need to practice drawing feet, c'mon you get paid to make art, you can't spend a few hours a week practicing a part of the human body you will draw repeatedly throughout your career?

looks like a stump with weird toes

I always find it a little suspicious when an artist is too good at it.

This is true. It's kind of like how you can tell a difference between animals drawn by normal people and animals drawn with the "furry gaze".

I didn't have the alter/quest that broke him and made him quit the game, but LOL. My quest was to check up on the still-living IRL version of the clone's dead black gay lover from his simulated memories.

Didn't they also cancel some game because, supposedly, "singleplayer RPGs don't sell?" I knew they were making pozzed ****.

I remember when everyone knew how to use 9-slice textures to create UI elements with rounded corners.
