It's felt less so now, but for a while it was almost impossible to get a publisher to sign off on a game if it didn't have features from Diablo 2.
Less so is not completely free, however, and you see many of those mechanics designed to purposely keep you playing popup all over the place.
I could never understand the fascination with the game, playing merely to make the number go up so you can make the number go up further. Color-coded loot to activate the reward centers, and so forth.

Games that make you feel like you wasted your time
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

I'm always confused when I see the praise for some games online. For instance, FF 3 (the NES one, not the SNES one) and 5 are two of my favorite games of all time but people are always jerking off over FF 4 and 6 because of the story or whatever. I think some people just want to watch a movie or read a book and not really play a game.Gastrick wrote: ↑ June 22nd, 2025, 19:31Sitting through this super-mediocre barebones-story game felt like that; decided not to use the run-away button to make it more difficult, but still cleared all the dungeons on the first try, all the bosses being easy as well, while being pushed along the linear route. Combat being generic and every character being a fighter-mage.

Not even remotely the same. Social aspect + accomplishment of completing challenges. Those games don't have anything like that, it's just rushing the same boss over and over to get the dopamine hit.Eyestabber wrote: ↑ June 23rd, 2025, 00:35rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ June 22nd, 2025, 23:53To expand: I find it hard to understate the damage Diablo 2 did to the RPG genre. I love Diablo 3 way more than Diablo 2 and I'm not ashamed of it. I'm not really sure I would call it an RPG though it's more of an arcade style game.

Social aspect = gaming for women. Diablo 2 spawned its own genre and Path of Exile perfected it. That other games tried to ape the formula is nothing new. Diablo-likes have action combat that works, unlike WoW derived decline.
I actually like D3's story experience. The voice acting of the male Demon Hunter helped carry the game. I remember that early quest where you help the blacksmith who lost his wife and he vows to make weapons for you to kill the demons. I got invested in the Adria subplot of Reaper of Souls wanting to kill her. I was looking forward to what would become of the hero in the planned second expansion in which it was implied that the world would turn against the hero, but then years and years passed and it was clear that it was cancelled and we would never get a conclusion.Nooneatall wrote: ↑ June 23rd, 2025, 00:39I love Diablo 3 way more than Diablo 2 and I'm not ashamed of it. "action combat" in path of exile is running around while the entire screen explodes.Eyestabber wrote: ↑ June 23rd, 2025, 00:41Social aspect = gaming for women. I love bullet heaven games too. I agree that they shouldn't be considered rpgs or anything like that, it's an arcade game.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ June 23rd, 2025, 00:42"action combat" in path of exile is running around while the entire screen explodes.Eyestabber wrote: ↑ June 23rd, 2025, 00:41Social aspect = gaming for women. Median XL is a load of fun, but it needs a group of bros to really keep it going.Vergil wrote: ↑ June 22nd, 2025, 23:55I enjoyed the weird modded version that @Tweed had some of us play for a while.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ June 22nd, 2025, 23:53To expand: I find it hard to understate the damage Diablo 2 did to the RPG genre. I played that back in the day. Do you play the most up-to-date version or the fork/old version?Tweed wrote: ↑ June 23rd, 2025, 04:14Median XL is a load of fun, but it needs a group of bros to really keep it going.Vergil wrote: ↑ June 22nd, 2025, 23:55I enjoyed the weird modded version that @Tweed had some of us play for a while.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ June 22nd, 2025, 23:53

We were playing the newest. I hear a lot of back and forth about new bad old good, but we were having fun. I was actually having a blast right up until I got an ultra rare helmet and I knew I'd have to try and trade with weridos to get something I wanted because we didn't have enough bros playing.Eyestabber wrote: ↑ June 23rd, 2025, 11:16I played that back in the day. Fallout 3. I was going by sheer inertia towards the end.
The Dig — This was alright until the boilerplate 2001: Space Odyssey style ending. After that happened I felt like I shouldn't have ******* bothered installing it.

Got the feeling again while playing Starcom Unknown Space. It was really dragging with zero progression actually happening, asked myself "What am I even doing?" and stopped. Think I'm going to do that more now instead of just continuing.
