Resident Evil

Post by Vergil »

I randomly started playing Resident Evil 4 because I'm getting severe fantasy game burn out. Considering how the series ended up evolving due to it's success are you still able to enjoy Resident Evil 4 despite it being the beginning of the end for the series' survival horror roots for a long time?
How do you feel about the first person Resident Evil games? Personally I detest them and don't really like the direction the franchise as a whole has taken.
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

When I was a tyke, I had RE2 on... the Dreamcast? Only played to the first screen because it was too scary. Watched my dad play a bit and I remember getting mad because the character refused to pick up a machine gun to save it for the other PC.

Later I scammed my friend by trading a season of Family Guy for his copy of RE4 on the GameCube, but I didn't include all of the DVDs . It was too scary for me so I mostly watched my other friend play it. He never made it past the gong room with the wolverine guys. I would most just do the opening village part over and over until the chainsaw guy appeared (too scary). There was a clip on IGN where the guy 'saved' the dog by shooting the bear trap, which I would always replicate, but if you do it that way the dog won't return later.

Finished RE5 coop with my friend who I scammed. The multi-player and actionness makes it not very scary. Probably wouldn't have been very fun solo.

A few years ago I tried to play the GameCube remake of RE1 by myself, but the scariness in addition to the limited save system stopped me. I made decent progress in the mansion but never made it to the lab or fought any bosses.

I like most of the games in the series, for me they range from okay to great (with Code Veronica and RE6 being bad exceptions). RE4 was great, is great, and will always be great, changing your opinion on a game because of something that happened after its release is gay.

I liked Call of Cthulhu DCotE and Condemned back in the day, so I did not mind "a RE game but in first-person!" at all. These entries were merely experimental anyway, Capcom quickly realized that it would be better to shift back to third person.

I also view older RE games with fixed camera angles as a separate sub-series within RE franchise, and don't compare them to the later over-the-shoulder entries.

The original games are a sub-series? :pipe-thinking:

There's a clear breaking point, both lore-wise, and gameplay-wise, between RE1-3, Veronica, RE1R and RE0, and everything that came after RE4.

RE4 to RE6, and the two Revelation games, are their own thing too.

RE7 and 8, again, are separate from the rest. I don't think 9 will tie in with those.

In fact, they should use 9 as a soft reboot of the series, and to retire many of old characters (who are now mostly in their 50s), so they can start fresh with 10.

People keep saying that Requiem will have Leon as the true Protagonist. Sounds kinda plausible since he's still young IF they go by remake Leon which could be the case since the guy voicing him and doing the mocap has a untitled AAA game on his resume.
I don't mind Grace being the protagonist though. She ain't ugly, she seems interesting enough looks-wise and I doubt she will have a ****** personality and this game is probably the game where she gets hardened like Leon did back then.

Oh and I hope to God that they will go parasites/virus from now on and not black goo or some other gay ****

Are they still using their facescanning technology? Neither Grace nor her nignog boss have that uncanny valley look to them, so I assumed that Capcom reverted back to bespoke 3d models, or using facescanning, but then touching up the models to give them a more stylized look.

Probably the latter, since this is still the RE Engine. They probably still facescan and then touchup the models.

Whatever they're doing, I am glad they stopped pushing for photorealism so hard. Grace actually looks like a human, instead of a goblin.

Yeah. now we just have to wait for more infos and gameplay. I just hope it will be less like 7 and Village and more like RE4 or even RE1.

Don't quote me on this, but IIRC this is allegedly an open-world game. If that is indeed the case, I'm interested to see how Capcom will handle this, though there's a big chance they'll **** it up.

As long as it doesn't dilute the story I am fine with it. Just hope it won't become a ubisoft collectathon.
I liked how The Evil Within 2 did it, you had side-missions and dynamic events going on, like that ghost lady stalking you and then fighting her at the end.

I myself prefer the 1, 2 and 3 of the franchise, but can like the "more modern" ones as well, but none are quite my favourite. They feel different, not sure how to explain. Even the "remake" of the 1st game, where they kept the camera angles etc, lacks something that I can't quite explain. First person is not something I see going too hand in hand with Resident Evil, but there are some that I found enjoyable, though different, like Darkside Chronicles (there is also one that has Umbrella in the name I think, but I forget it at the moment).
I also found myself liking the sort of "action style" thing they did since the 4th game up to 6 (adding also Revelations etc in the mix), but I treat them as watching a movie, in a way, more than any real continuation to 1, 2 and 3.

I have Resident Evil 5 on cd, maybe somewhere else as well I can't recall, and though I have no idea how that works as I never had anyone to play this game with, I would love to play together if you might want  (If it is due to one player having to play, if I am understanding this correctly, as Chris and the other option being Sheva, I will play as Sheva no problem to play together, do not worry  She quite grew on me throughout the game, I have to say. Possibly due to the many meme-videos and funny happenings I encountered while playing, much like pestering Hayes in King Kong

I love Resident Evil 6 and quite frankly it’s my favourite game in the series. Sure it completely ignores its survivor horror roots and was a straight up linear third person action game with story that is absurd even by resident evil standards. But you know what ….**** it , game was fun and an absolute blast to play.
