What is the most unlikeable protagonist you have played as?

I think Tidus was pretty hard to like at first (and honestly, even halfway through the game). I only really started to warm up to him near the end — his bond with Yuna and the twist about his journey made him a bit more bearable. But still… yeah, he was annoying as hell.

Of the RPGs I've played out there... maybe Luke fon Fabre from Tales of the Abyss? I've always seen him considered possibly one of the most interesting JRPG protagonists due to his extreme character change about halfway through the game starting from insufferable to a more "heroic" character, but both versions of him weren't particularly likeable to me.

Admittedly, I never did complete that game but he was pretty insufferable for the first half of it. At the beginning he's pretty much whiny and complains all the time about everything and everyone, and is all-around just rude and a jerk to everyone in his party. Basically everyone talks bad about him in turn. What I did like about him at that point is that he did have a backbone though and wasn't afraid to call out other people, which he suddenly mostly seems to lose after his "character development" kicks in. He basically causes the destruction of a town and a bunch of people get killed, and despite it not being strictly just his fault his entire party calls him out for it as if it was, and then he decides to change afterward. He then basically becomes the complete opposite. Beats himself up way too much and basically allowed everyone to trash talk him without really going after them as much, so he felt like something of a doormat by the time the second half of the game comes up. Not too long after that point I kind of just dropped the game.

In general I kind of felt like TotA had an unlikable party in general, though. Despite my feelings about Luke, I think Anise Tatlin might have been the worst overall. She was plain annoying and got off way too easily with the things she does to the rest of the party and such in the game.

It was kind of unfortunate because I always saw the game hyped up a lot and decided to try it out as a result, but I really just couldn't get into it.
