The only RGG game I played is Yakuza 0, which had an overall serious main story about mafians committing murder trying to get the deed to the last property in the area so they can bundle it up as a package deal for tear down and reconstruction. I can't recall anything egregious in the main story. But the sidequest stuff had such a nasty flavor with the man running around in a diaper or the host club or Kiryu on the phone and sexual talk happening.Unhelpful Contrarian wrote: ↑ April 28th, 2025, 15:18its characters are nonsensical, plot convinces galore, character regression ,awful anime tropes and constant tonal whiplash.I seen more logical planing from Dr Evil than the villains in this game. It’s very rare for me to actively dislike a game because of a bad story but this is one of those exceptions that completed sour my opinion about the entire game.
We have a Steam curator now. You should be following it. https://store.steampowered.com/curator/44994899-RPGHQ/
What game are you playing?
Yakuza progressively got wackier with each entry. ( Yakuza 0 was a return to being grounded) Some people enjoy that change in direction, I do not and thats putting it mildly.Val the Moofia Boss wrote: ↑ April 28th, 2025, 20:47

Octopath Traveler, for the first time. I feel dumb for spending the first few hours of the game trying to solo everything with the thief, and not recruiting anyone else. The game actually gets much more rich if you party up.
Yeah, it's Valheim with drugs essentially.Jordy wrote: ↑ April 24th, 2025, 19:02Decided to try Schedule 1 because I found the number of positive reviews in the short space of time hard to believe.
All you do is the same grind over and over again and then do more grind in larger numbers. It's crap, don't play it.
Having said that, I keep playing it...
Just finished Dark Souls 2, decided to try it out because of this thread, which turned out to be quite a chore for reasons tons of people have already mentioned. I even finished the DLCs because of how much praise they have and they didn't amaze me either. Trying out Dark Souls 3 next, hopefully it'd be better than the previous 2 games.

Expedition 33, I finished the story and am working on the optional content (at a slower pace). Started Judgment since I've been marathonning every RGG game the past few months, and SMT 4

Not today.
Honest question, does anyone actually enjoy DS1 and DS2? I believe some genuinely like DS3, but for the first two, even the most ardent fans I saw treated it like some kind of penitent self-punishment, but would still praise them since "they are hard so that means they are good".Tinky Winky wrote: ↑ May 1st, 2025, 02:50Just finished Dark Souls 2, decided to try it out because of this thread, which turned out to be quite a chore for reasons tons of people have already mentioned.
My own experience with the series is very limited. Tried DS1 for a couple of days, figured it was not designed to be played by human beings, and forfeited it in preference of DMC3, of all things.
Suppose you might be too young to know, but Dark Souls was massively popular when it was released and held up as a pinnacle of game design.dagal wrote: ↑ May 1st, 2025, 12:43Honest question, does anyone actually enjoy DS1 and DS2? It's like scat fetish, some people just like that kind of taste and are very proud of it. Didn't find them enjoyable myself as there is obscene amount of spawn triggers and nes tier general bullshitties in all three games afaik.dagal wrote: ↑ May 1st, 2025, 12:43Honest question, does anyone actually enjoy DS1 and DS2? Heh, thanks for the compliment. By the time it was released, I wasn't really following gayming news anymore, since all the paper magazines I trusted were discontinued.Roguey wrote: ↑ May 1st, 2025, 14:25Suppose you might be too young to know, but Dark Souls was massively popular when it was released and held up as a pinnacle of game design.dagal wrote: ↑ May 1st, 2025, 12:43Honest question, does anyone actually enjoy DS1 and DS2? Have been playing CrossCode. It's a mix of familiar elements in particular combination I haven't encountered before.
Possibly the most respectful game ever made. Tutorials take 4 seconds to watch. You can progress the dungeons or do quests in the world in the order you want. Backtracking is quick. The most challenging fights and puzzles are optional.
I also like the setting of the game taking place when the characters are logged into a game.
I do, but a) They aren't RPGs and b) they are not as hard as people hype them up to be. DS1 is actually quite fair (as long as you don't mash buttons) and DS2 leans too much on ambushes. DS3/Elden Ring are the ones that go all in on having enemies play by different rules to up the difficulty; but as long as you ponder your tactics per enemy, you should be fine. With that said, the games are harder if tackled with an arcadey, aggressive playstyle (like DMC3), at least as your first playthrough (unless you are a souls veteran).dagal wrote: ↑ May 1st, 2025, 12:43Honest question, does anyone actually enjoy DS1 and DS2? VAE VICTIS
I have, and I still do on an occasion. Comparatively, I enjoyed the Elden Ring, but a bit less, and same can be said about DS3.dagal wrote: ↑ May 1st, 2025, 12:43Honest question, does anyone actually enjoy DS1 and DS2? Both games are much slower pace than the later entries, and emphasize a more careful approach rather than just rushing in and mashing R1. They were not as hard as people make them out to be, in fact they were mostly fair. DS2 did rely a bit too much on ambushes, but it wasn't something you couldn't deal with. Modern games tend to slide towards the button masher/many attacks much wow type direction. Not bashing on DMC and similar games, they have their own appeal, but it's just not what Dark Souls used to be, and comparing it would be pretty crazy. It does seem that modern gamers are more drawn to faster paced games and there's plenty to be said about that.
TL;DR: DS1 and 2 were closer to the Dark Souls DNA than 3 and Elden ring (which became more of Bloodborne/DS/whatever else hybird), and are slower paced and somewhat punish button mashing. My guess is that ppl who have started with DS3 don't like them primarily due to slower speed and the expectation to not mash buttons expecting to win.
I like sugar, and I like tea.
Finished with a replay of Oblivion where I focused on the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves Guild questlines with difficulty set to 0, Passive Beasts, and No Psychic Guards. The DB started off pretty interesting, though it fell off into laziness and frustration after the big twist. The last quest is particularly stupid about railroading. They even bothered to script and record a unique reaction if you take the dead mother's head and bring it out in front of the secret murderer, but there's nothing you can actually do about it, just let it all play out like an Emil Pagliarulo self-insert.
The thieves guild was all right, though the stealth gameplay isn't quite as polished as it could be. There were a few times where I had no choice but to acquire a bounty, though I suppose that's why they had cutting the fee in half a perk of joining the guild. Didn't care for how the final tasks had dungeons to go through with creatures to fight, made them feel less unique.

Playing video games as an adult is for pussies. Real, bloatmaxxed men sit with their obese wife in a stadium, cheering on virile Tyrone as he tackles his opponents in a game of handegg.
You forget the part where the normal, functioning adult man starting a brawl with a stranger because he dares to support another Tyrone from the opposite team.psychic_dream wrote: ↑ May 2nd, 2025, 02:34Playing video games as an adult is for pussies. Resident Evil: Revelations. I just finished chapter 5. Game is schizophrenic, it's not sure if it wants to be an action game or a survival horror, which ends up damaging both sides and ending up being mediocre at both.
I give it a pass for being a port of a game originally meant to be played on the 3DS, but the chapter system suits portable consoles better than playing on PC or in a non-portable console. Game is meant to be played in short bursts.

The "previously on Resident Evil Revelations" chapter intros are cute, just like one of my Japanese animes.Capybara wrote: ↑ May 2nd, 2025, 04:20I give it a pass for being a port of a game originally meant to be played on the 3DS, but the chapter system suits portable consoles better than playing on PC or in a non-portable console. Almost done with Dark **** 3 with only the DLCs and final boss left to be done, which hopefully should be finished by this weekend. DS3 is mechanically the best of the three, but the level design itself has fully blown into a meme, I can't tell how much time I've been ambushed by triggered spawns and corner campers. Bosses are rather easy though as a sorcerer with help from the summons. Vordt was the only boss that gave me a trouble so far because how weak my character was at the beginning of the game.

Edit : the first DLC boss down, I hate the third phase of this spammy ***** who sexually identified as a helicopter, the first two phases are pushover but the third one gave me real trouble. Took me a few tries but with the summon I still manage to beat xer as a sorcerer.
