If such a tie happens and J1M doesn't break it in a timely manner (or have pre-broken it) I will roll some dice

That's because it's an important factor for gaymer grills. Women don't like playing a character, they enjoy self-inserting instead. If you give a Batman toy to a girl, she will make Batman go shopping, try different clothes and marrying a princess.

Would you play with a barbie toy like it was supposed to be used if someone gave it to you?

Barbie is a good example, actually. It is popular mainly because of the huge customization available, to make it easier to self-insert.

To get Arcanum to work on most modern systems, there's only two things you'll need (any maybe only one):

First is Drog's Unofficial Arcanum Patch: https://terra-arcanum.com/drog/uap.html
COMPONENTS

The patch consists of several modules:

UAP Base
All the bug fixes plus Extra Animations, Extended Ambient Tracks, HQ Townmaps and HQ Music.
High Resolution Patch
Allows the game to be played at any resolution. Defaults to 720p. Improves Windows 10 compatibility.
Official DLC
Adds 7 additional mini-campaigns. You can choose them in Options -> Game -> Module.
Race Mod
Makes Orcs, Ogres and Dark Elves playable with their own portraits, backgrounds and unique NPC interactions
Beta Content
Various things restored from pre-release versions of Arcanum.
Misc Mods
Various miscellaneous mods and additions.
It's 90% bug fixes plus a few optional modules. For instance, you can set the XP gain to be shared on kill rather than gain per hit; this prevents companions from stealing XP. You can also remove companion leveling and create your own custom levels (most companions are fine, but a few have truly awful level up scripts). There's a lot of options here, but if you want the base game experience don't use any of these modules.

It also includes Virgil's Debug Menu, just wear the mysterious ring you get at the crash site and talk to Virgil.

It also has the High Resolution Patch included, however....this brings me to the 2nd mod you may need:
Arcanum Universal Setup for UAP https://www.nexusmods.com/arcanumofstea ... ura/mods/4

Some people have found that UAP doesn't work very well on Windows 10/11 (go figure), and this can fix that and a few other issues.

The following is just opinion, however: Do NOT install Arcanum Multiverse Edition. It changes many fundamental aspects of the game. It will also change your keyboard to Russian (which could easily be fixed and the team just won't do it). It also pings most antivirus programs, and while it's a false positive (or so it seems when checking) they have said they just don't care.

Something interesting you might want to know before starting a game: Items in many chests are randomized depending on your Race, Sex, Background, and even name!

Grab the Unofficial Arcanum Patch. If using 'high resolution'(UAP may include it, can't remember), don't play in anything higher than 1280x720, as it's similar to the intended resolution but gives you widescreen. Arcanum would have had support for 1024x768, which isn't too far off. Playing it as SUPER HIGH RES just ruins the beautiful artwork because it zooms out.

Another mod to consider is the one that lets you use the train with a dog companion

If I want to build an elf character that uses magic, beauty, and whatever the charisma stat is in this are there any character creation pitfalls I need to know to avoid? How viable is this as a build? Will I be able to be a haughty and racist elf?

also the game is meant to be played in turn-based, the realtime was required by the publisher
there's a quick turnbased too, one of the keys toggles between it and regular turnbased

I dislike the Arcanum manual, it's overly long and verbose. It should have been split into two books, but instead it tries to intersperse story content with actual how-to content.
I'd instead recommend the Prima Guide:
https://archive.org/details/Arcanum_of_ ... a/mode/2up

Just skip anything related to actual quests/spoilers, of course.

But if you want to read the manual, that's available too: https://f.rpghq.org/SAi7s7gyFGuw.pdf?n=manual.pdf

Quick reference card:

You don't have a PDF plugin, but you can download the PDF file.

Called shot effects:
Tim Cain wrote:
Perhaps I can help.

The called shot penalties for head, arms and legs are -50, -30 and -30, respectively.

All called shots provide +10% better chance than non-called shots for generic effects, like doing bonus damage. Otherwise, the effects are as follows:
head with no helmet: +25% stun, +25% knocked out, +15% blinded (in addition to all other effects, like crushing or electrical damage has increases for stunning or knockout)
head with helmet: No bonus chance to stun or knock out, but +10% to blind. Plus, if doing crushing damage, 15% chance to knock off the helmet.
leg: +10% crippled leg, +25% knocked down (bipeds only)
arm: +10% crippled arm

You're not going to like this, but Beauty is meaningless. The only thing it affects is Reaction Modifier, which is easy to raise just by saying things people like. Or you can wear a smoking jacket.

Charisma is one of the strongest stats in the game. It's required for the best dialogue (Persuasion) and having multiple followers. You can bypass a lot of quests with it.

For magic in general you need Willpower for spell levels and mana, and Intelligence if you want to maintain more than one spell.

You can be a haughty and racist elf (you're going to love this part of the game).

Real shame that they got rid of the quick help screen that FO1 & 2 had, more games should have this:

The game isn't particularly hard(read: able to softlock yourself with poor choices), just make the character you want to make.
