Last Epoch

Post by Eyestabber »

Since PoE 2 decided to **** me in the *** and not even buy me dinner first I decided to check out the competition. Well, PoE 2 doesn't really have competition on its same league, budget-wise, (D4 doesn't count) BUT we have PoE at home aka Last Epoch which is...surprisingly good?

I played the game with a sorcerer from start up until halfway through monoliths. Then the server went down for 1.2 and I'm actually quite hyped about it. I really like this game's crafting, it's God-tier and combat feels smooth and FUN. Boss fights are somewhat challenging but never oppressive, character progressions is the game's #1 selling point and the graphics are...ok. They're ok. I also like the time travel gimmick, in many games I see a fallen kingdom and go like "would be cool to see this in its glory days". PoE 2 did it right with act 3 and the maps of Last Epoch are a fun addition as you get to see how the world evolved through the ages. The world itself is generic fantasy and enemy design is serviceable but not memorable. My main let down was the story. I'm no storyfag, but I expect stories in my RPGs to have an actual ending, not a ****** cliffhanger, but whatever.

Anyway, game is very good and you should try it. It also broke into Steam's top sellers today, so there's that:

Played a decent amount during launch and had a good enough time with it. I agree with pretty much all your critiques, including the ones about PoE2. And you can call me a filthy ******* casual, if you want, but the thing I'm most looking forward to with LE's S2 patch is the experimental WASD movement.

I don't think LE will magically overtake the genre as the new king of the hill, but it should see a decent amount of short-term success given how bad GGG fumbled the bag recently.

iirc the devs seethed over wasd even tho it is the superior control scheme
using the same input to attack and move is just stupid, always has been, the console versions of diablo games were better because you could move+attack

some diablo clones also supported wasd movement e.g., van helsing games(good fun)

no idea why lootclicker lovers get so angry when you point this out

Literally nobody on the planet does that.

I remember a D1 savegame taking your ENTIRE memory card. It was like 12 slots or so.

Nobody got angry? People have asked for it and the devs delivered, despite their own reservations about it.

Yeah, like I said, it's a clear David and Goliath scenario and LE's player base is a drop in the bucket compared to PoE2. Its mainstream appeal is much more limited with its inferior graphics, VFX and animations so there's zero chance LE suddenly becomes the go-to Diablo-like, BUT it does breathe new life into a game that started 2025 with news articles asking if it was dead. Competition is always great for us, consumers. I sure hope their improvements to the endgame are enough because my impression was "this is really fun, but I don't see myself playing for over 100 hours".

That's how diablo 1 & 2 control
Eyestabber wrote: April 17th, 2025, 13:42

They do. LE devs even refused to implement WASD controls because it's simply a superior control scheme and makes diablo 2 lovers butthurt

Direct quote:
I’m sorry to say that we recently debated adding this in a game design meeting. We are intentionally not adding WASD movement to Last Epoch at this time.
The primary method of control for the game links your targeting and movement positions to the same point, your mouse cursor. If we include WASD movement then you can move left and shoot right at the same time. Now you might just be thinking, “yea, that’s what I want”. It’s a not insignificant advantage. Suddenly the way you have to play is with WASD movement if you want to be competitive. This is a deal breaker for us.

Wasd is actually a buff in DPS for most arpgs. Devs have to then design around players being able to move while aiming in a different direction.

Also I'll be playing to, let me know your steam names

So this is 'decline was right all along' the thread?

While LE is the best ARPG mechanically, the horrible techstack (Unity) unfortunately already spells its doom. Expect Horrible FPS and unresponsive controls. The real reason why the don't do WASD is because they can't do it.

Diablo IV still reigns supreme.

Lol, you were NEVER right. PoE 2 was a great game until they botched it, it may become good again in the future if they reverse course. And Diablo IV is a turd for shitslurpers.

****** streamers gaslit me into thinking melee levelling was bad, I levelled with Rive with zero issues and ton of fun. My Jogger picked up a jogging hammer and just jogged all over the monsters, bosses and ****. I'm currently jogging Raylegh's temple, nearly done with the campaign.

The review bombing isn't from the sale alone (although that was a precursor to the next part), the most recent outrage has been from the announcement of an entirely new class/class type as being sold as DLC when the developers previously stated, throughout the game's lifespan, the only thing that would be purchasable would be cosmetics. This was something I helped kickstart and, honestly, feel like I've gotten my money's worth out of. I appreciated that it had an offline mode at launch and has been slowly improving the game. Once the sale hit, though, it's been mistake after mistake. Oh well.
