SMTV (Shin Megami Tensei V)

Post by Greyborne »

Recently started playing the new release of this. Never played the Switch version.

So besides the protagonist looking like a chick (idk wtf they were thinking) it's actually pretty decent as far as recent JRPGs go.
I kind of appreciate the multiple religious undertones in everything, too. Have only gotten past the tutorial and first boss, so idk if there's any slop.
Plus, I'm constantly being called "young man" to affirm that I am actually playing as a male.

We'll see. I liked Nocturne when I was a kid, and that was my last SMT game. Never beat a Persona game after I played 4, and had to deal with Kanji's character arc.
I'm a meat and potatoes kind of guy.

I'm bad at video games and found it hard. I got to the boss after the werewolf and left it to collect dust.

I remember reading feedback about it around the time it released and everyone was saying it was shallow, story and character wise. But Vengeance, so far, seems to correct what I seen were the main complaints. I'll admit, the characters and plot still seem a bit shallow. Maybe it'll get better.

That's how it goes with JRPGs. Idk if any of you have played Legend Of Dragoon, but the Grand Jewel boss was so frustrating, I stopped and didn't pick it back up for nearly 20 years. lol

Does it play like Nocturne? I've played every mainline game up through Nocturne and, at least visually, this one seems like it's going for the same style.

Pretty much reminds me of it in a lot of ways. In some ways, not so much. Soundtrack is just as good, art direction (besides human characters) is pretty much the same. Combat is snappy. No more random encounters which is a huge plus. There's this new mechanic where you can go to this area called the Demon Haunt, which lets you talk and build relationships with your demons, which is where most of the game's personality comes from. Every demon seems to have a different personality so far, which is insane.

I dropped it after the girl got eaten by a hair demon. Idk the real world apocalypse dungeon wasn't that gratifying.

I'm hoping there's a different biome at some point.

Yeah, a palette swap wasn't enough. I know the real world's been destroyed, but that should have helped level design, not hinder it.

Legend of Dragoon is a bad example for any purpose, it's one of the worst games in history.

I have a friend who has played Legend of Dragoon multiple times a year for the last 20 years.

Oh yea, an overrated game that many claim to be underrated. But when you're 10 years old and the only JRPG you've played at the time is your brother's copy of FF7- it did the job as an entry point into the genre. Later when I played it as an adult, the cliches and tropes were a bit much.

Does it play like Nocturne? I've played every mainline game up through Nocturne and, at least visually, this one seems like it's going for the same style.
It's a good bit easier than Nocturne and much more based on open-world exploration than dungeon crawling. The overall tone is less forboding and ominous. Both games have fairly minimalist stories, but SMTV is a bit less so. I liked it.

This is still the current game I'm playing, and I have to say Atlas has **** near perfected their battle formula. It's snappy, it's flashy, and can still require some strategic planning. The monster collecting is quite refined, and the soundtrack has to be my favorite aspect so far. There's quite a few different personalities for demons, and they went out of their way to flesh them out with Vengeance. I'm liking this more than pretty much any Atlas game I've played.

But, it definitely has a slow start.

It’s better then original version but still falls short in story and characters compared to previous games, which is understandable since there is only so much you can fix when the foundation core is bad to begin with.

I originally thought SMT 4 was ok but as I played more of the SMT Mainline games my appreciation for the game grew and now I consider it the second best in the series, first one being SMT 3.
