Emperor of the Fading Suns

For discussing tactical and strategy games. What's the difference between tactics and strategy anyways?

This quarter century old game is getting a Steam release at 4th of April!

There's also official discord with devs if you're into it.

If you have no idea what is it about, you may check my LP, it's edgy and has bewbs.

A shapeshifter assassin named "Doppelganger" is going on.

That's a unit stack menu ("army view" if you will). Up to 20 units per stack / hex. Unit picture and stats are on top. City panel below - this stack sits in a fort.
Judging by the minimap, it's a custom galaxy with expanded number of planets ("Lost worlds" or something). Probably a first turn for Li Halan.

Or pirate the GOG version, yes.
These guys are one of the few devs I like enough to buy from.

D1P because I spent many hours in my younger days playing it and it's bad form to not purchase it now that it's on Steam.
And considering the devs had been patching it up over the years, they deserve the money.
Now I have a problem with the Steam release, the game's resolution is either Full screen, or so small only ants could see ****.

Yes, GOG is better in this regard. It defaults to 1600*1200.
There's also dumb UI script that autoselects one of your stacks for you and you can't throw it off cursor. There're complaints about this on their discord, it will probably be patched away soon. Because it isn't this way in GOG.

One of the best 4x ever made (that is also DEI heavy, includes ****** etc, outrage!) got... recompiled.
That's literally all they did. Not even upped the resolution.
Avoid.

if you bought Emperor of the Fading Suns on GOG when it was re-released there several years ago, you got the fixed up version for free. besides achievements, there is zero difference between the revamped GOG release and the Steam release - the devs are just making the game available on multiple storefronts

the effort the devs put into fixing the game isn't something to sneeze at either. the game doesn't constantly crash every 5 minutes anymore, and the solution they used for widescreen monitors is fine - pillarboxing is a hell lot better than stretching

I expect more from a resale after 28 years that even has 'enhanced' in the title.

This's factually not true. They're expanding modding capabilities significantly. Not in as big scale as Illwinter, but I believe they're still busy porting and fixing the bugs.
The game is still WIP. So if you want finished product, then yes, avoid.
If you like the game enough to have played it even in its 1990s iteration (as I do), then you should see the progress. I do. Devs do improve.
