There's really no reason this game couldn't have playable elves. So far there's more dialog where characters randomly point out you're a human that could just be cut if you choose elf. Lazy lazy ******.

The difference is Hawke is not an established character from a book series with lore the developers had to follow. There was no character of Hawke before they created him.
And there's no reason the preset character of "impoverished family fleeing war" absolutely had to be human. There are other elves you meet in identical circumstances as the Hawkes.

The entire basis of being allowed to purchase entry is because you're nobility. An elf would have been told to go drown.

There are elven prostitutes in the games. And, considering how there are a bunch of drunk elves in the Alienage, it could be reasonable to infer that there's moonshining going on too.

The initial inspiration for the elves actually came from Jewish people—consider the lost homeland, the existence of Jewish ghettos in many medieval cities, etc.
Elves are closer to modern White people even to the point of losing our own history as schools teach that magical ******* actually invented everything, sent us to the moon etc.
