has Darksiders lost its way, or is it just me?
has Darksiders lost its way, or is it just me?
I don’t see this video game series getting much attention these days, which is honestly kind of weird to me because I remember when the original came out, I had a lot of fun with it.
The combat in the first one is solid, but it could still use some polishing. The dungeons are unique and memorable, though the game did feel a bit linear. The whole quasi-Christian religious theme was done pretty well, and War’s conviction was definitely interesting.
Then there’s Darksiders 2, which fixed my main issue with the combat by adding a bunch of new combat styles. Dual-wielding, sledgehammer bonking— you name it. The devs also mixed up the level design, but it’s a shame they turned it into a semi-open world with looting mechanics. Death’s edgy attitude in Darksiders 2 takes me back to when I used to enjoy grimdark fiction with all that edgy stuff. Remember when devs were throwing in things like alt rock, death, sex, and tribal tattoos? I miss those times. Now everything feels fake and gay.
As for Darksiders Genesis and Darksiders 3, I can’t say much because I haven’t played them yet, but didn’t both of them flop pretty hard? Honestly, I haven’t kept up with the series much lately.
All in all, the Darksiders series has had its ups and downs, but it’s always been fun to play. It might not be as popular as it once was, but it’s still had a big impact. The first game had solid combat, and Darksiders 2 mixed things up a lot, but the whole open-world and loot thing in later games definitely wasn’t for everyone. So, what do you think? Has the series gotten better or lost its way?

Mediocre franchise that got worse over time and then died of its death.
I'm just stating the facts.

Nah, the installments still have some merits. The puzzles, for example, require you to actually focus on your surroundings and solve them in intuitive ways, unlike those in other games where it's basically "go from point A to B, pick up the rock, and place it in the appropriate notch" Skyrim-tier puzzles. The combat is fluid and far surpasses what 3D Zelda and the original God of War have to offer. I guess if you don't like this genre of games, you wouldn't be into it anyway. But to each their own, I guess.Vergil wrote: ↑ March 24th, 2025, 19:55Mediocre franchise that got worse over time and then died of its death.
Speaking of edginess, I just remembered that even the mediocre Crash of the Titans jumped on the trend and slapped a tribal tattoo on poor Crash—how many video games did that anyway, just adding a tribal tattoo to characters for no real reason?

Hey it's the soul vs soulless meme
They still make games in the series? I played the first one and thought it was kind of boring. Didn't finish it. I remember a second one being made and then never heard about it again

Don't take my word as gospel, but from what I've seen of Darksiders 3, it feels like just another trend-chasing Soulslike derivative. Genesis seems to have shifted to a Diablo clone with cringe, reddit-like writing. It's a shame because I really liked the first two games.GhostCow wrote: ↑ March 24th, 2025, 22:28They still make games in the series? I played the first one and thought it was kind of boring. Only played the first 2 once. Third looked bad and whip weapon wasnt my thing, didnt even bother. Probably will replay them some day if I get them running on win10, doesnt really seem like much will come out this year for me.

The most disappointing thing about Darksiders 3 is combat, they try to make a souls-like combat, which doesn't fit franchise at all. I hope they never make 4th part, they **** it up 100%.

No. If you count the spin-off title Darksiders Genesis yes.
But Strife has not gotten a title similar to Darksiders 1-3

I would say Darksiders never lost its way. It just never had the balls to create a sequel. The subsequent products are prequels and side stories.psychic_dream wrote: ↑ March 24th, 2025, 19:53I don’t see this video game series getting much attention these days, which is honestly kind of weird to me because I remember when the original came out, I had a lot of fun with it.

Darksiders 3 basically feels like a Darksiders 1 DLC. It tries to offer more of what people liked, but just doesn't do it as well as the first attempt.
They also got confused and thought the series was "mash 2 popular action-adventure games together", when really the magic was "what if Zelda had God of War combat?" because there just aren't enough Zelda games released each decade.
