I don't know if it was some kind of cope, but I once heard that when Western men go for Japanese girls, we often end up pairing with the more Western-looking ones with tall faces and defined cheekbones and such, which in Japan are considered ugly because their men prefer the babyfaced ones like in your picture.

I'm not sure how to confirm or deny it, because if I search for 'japanese woman' and look for ones with the facial structure of a young Leslie Bibb, it's still obviously going to be at least a stock photo model or something, so she probably isn't considered utterly hideous by her kinsmen.
